Alignment question 200 1989

As far as front suspension goes, when replacing certain parts, What do you need an alignment for?

I know when doing the tie rod ends you need one, but what about ball joints, or the front struts?... I ask because the steering u-joint has to be done, and I'd like to lump in a few replacement parts with this as long as I'm getting an alignment. So, anything that doesn't require an alignment, I'd like to postpone.

I know the struts need to be done and possibly the ball joints and tie rod ends. I haven't tested them yet, but they're as old as I can remember.

You probably don't have to replace all those parts. Take it in and ask what needs to be changed to do an alignment.

You mention suspension ... If you are thinking of the A-arm bushing I think it a good idea to do that before an alignment.

Ah, seems like an entire front bushing kit might make sense too. And unless the rack was leaking, I'd probably leave it alone?... Lots to consider on a limited budget.

An 1989 is of that age where the bushings are suspect.

If you go that way take some time to make sure your A-arms are not bent.
I had hit a curb a while back but never noticed that it had put a slight arch in the A-arm from the wheel back to the body.

I can't remember what I was doing in the wheel well that I noticed it. I'm glad I found it before installing bushings and doing an alignment. It was one reason for the slight pull in the steering.

Sorry, I can't delete a msg placed here by mistake. :)

I guess I'm not looking forward to spending on the entire rack.. I'd like to do the reasonable minimum. Sounds like struts and tie rod ends may be good for now. Maybe ball joints later?...

Can I just get the strut inserts? Or do I have to get extra Volvo parts/upper shock mount? Some ppl here say you don't need the mount, that they rarely go bad. I know it looks pretty good still, and there's no noise on a tight turn. If I could get away with spending under 150 for all the extra parts.. Might make it more worthwhile.

Or am I just another cheap 240 dreamer? Because of these looming questions, and spring danger element, I've never actually attempted to replace any struts in my lifetime. I'd like to change that though.
