Can a TPS be 1/2 broken? 200 1988

I am testing my Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) and am getting a good reading on one side but the other side I'm not sure if I have good contact or if it has just failed. It is very difficult to reach when installed.

From my wiring diagrams it looks like this would be the cold start side.
If that is the case would I have a bad idle until the car warmed up and would it be bad low RPM from a lean mix?

This would contradict my Rich running problem.

    Can a TPS be 1/2 broken? 200 1988

My last test drive seems to confirm the TPS is not working on the cold start side (?).

    Test drive / 5 (-) minutes.
Idle is low and unsteady when I started it cold.
Under power the engine was also not running smooth.

After warming up and under power the engine smoothed out some.
Pulling off throttle there is a short flash of dash light(s) as idle drops low before it recovers to a higher, more normal RPM.
    -------
I checked the Timing and it is on mark but not steady w/ 2 degree (+/-) shake.
    -------
Test drive again / 5 to 10 minutes.
This time the unsteady symptoms where hardly noticeable while under power.
Idle is recovering and is at higher RPM but still feels unsteady .
    -------

Am I just telling myself a story?

I added injection cleaner to my last tank of gas so it may be having it's effect and loosening slug from the combustion chamber. This question on the TPS comes from my tracking down a Rich running problem.

By TPS you mean throttle position sensor, right?
On non-turbo models, it has two switches, on turbos it has two but only one is used by the ECU.
One switch is "Idle" the other is "Wide open throttle". The middle pin is ground for both switches.

Sometimes, people mix up connectors for the cold start injector (not present on all models/configurations/years) and the TPS.

The dash lights make sense, so long as it's only with a brief low engine speed.

It sounds to me like your idle system is not working - either because the throttle plate isn't staying shut, the idle switch isn't working, or the idle air control valve isn't working.

What I would check is that the idle side of the TPS works and that the IAC (Idle air control valve) works. There are a few ways to check this and to clean and lubricate it (I don't recommend using brake cleaner). I would also check to make sure that the TPS clicks when throttle plate is opened/closed.

A lot of people "fix" a broken idle system by shortening the rod between the throttle spool and the throttle plate or by lengthening the throttle stop screw. If someone's fiddled with either, you'll need to adjust the throttle plate position and then maybe the TPS (but probably not).

This thread http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1323069/220/240/260/280/throttle_position_switch_never_closes_2.html might be useful to you for the theory, though it's talking about the 90 240.
You may be able to check the TPS for continuity by probing another set of wires elsewhere (like at the ECU).

      Good Luck!

you need to understand there is no cold start side on the switch. there is on/off at idle and on/off at full throttle. nothing else. look elsewhere for mor clues. good luck, chuck.

The books have been know to be wrong (?).

The "start, cold engine" diagram shows a red connection to the #3 terminal of the TPS.

The #2 terminal shows to engage when there is a "stall".

What's missing is a diagram for "open throttle".

But now that you bring it up the TPS is operated by the throttle plate isn't it?
So there would only be a one sided open/close switch ...

So what is the other side for?

BTW I do get the audible click when the throttle plate is moved.

The TPS is two switches. The important one, the snap-action switch makes at closed throttle and breaks at the slightest opening. The wide-open throttle switch is a wiper arrangement that makes at ~>60% throttle to let the ECU know you might want some full-throttle enrichment. It is less reliable and prone to oil contamination. Both switches are connected to a common pin, which is grounded by the harness wiring.

So yes, it can be 1/2 broken and frequently is, in my experience.

One obtains this kind of knowledge in the junkyard. Take one apart and you will agree.

Is it safe to assume that if the inside of the TPS is fouled that even though the switch may work the device may still be sporadically shorting?

Are you able to tell me which pin is for idle and which is for full throttle?
Based on the book illustration of the TPS installed, the #2 pin is on the bottom and #3 pin is on the top.
#18 (ground) being in the middle.

Give us the name of the book you're using and a page reference.
We can't look over your shoulder from here.
