re: 87 245 auto - homemade crankshaft seal press tool 200 1987

Hi all,

My crankshaft seal is leaking and it needs to be replaced. I would like to make a seal press tool using a PVC tube. I can match the diameter against the seal but What about tube height/length? I got an OEM seal. I will be doing this when I put a new timing belt/harmonic balancer. Thank you as always.

Hi Nel621, Bruce and Tony

At last, I made one today. It doesn't fit perfect but hope it works. It looks like the SPX corp. no longer carries the Volvo OE tool, I couldn't found it. May be I might just do Michelangelo chisel style; drift and hammer.

Thank you all once again!

If it's still available, I recommend this Volvo seal tool. Source details IN THIS THREAD.

Tool fits on crankshaft, then presses the seal in using crank pulley bolt after smearing a thin coat of grease on seal outer surface.

Looks like this can be made using a PVC cap. Just scribe a line around it for depth reference.

re: 87 245 auto - homemade crankshaft seal press tool 200 1987

There's more to it than just pushing the seal into place. I don't think a PVC cap could be machined to work like this tool, with it's precision fit on the crank hub and tapered seal-mounting sleeve.

What you can't see my photo is that diametrically tapered sleeve where the seal is positioned. The sleeve's inside diameter (ID) has a close tolerance to the crankshaft outside diameter (OD). The sleeve's OD starts small enough for the seal to fit on easily, then tapers to a slightly larger diameter. This opens the spring-backed lip and prevents it from deforming as the seal is installed.
