re: 87 245 auto - greeting from swedish baklava 200 1987

Hi all,

It's a little late for self introduction but it's better than never.

Please say hello to my Swedish Baklava. I named her after rusty floor pan that looks like baklava. Few years ago, I was looking for a comfortable commuter car that can handle 100 miles/day without breaking my wallet. After searching for the right car, our entire family members came to an agreement and decided to give this Volvo a try. By the way, we always have owned Japanese cars like Honda and Toyota since we got burned with our 85 Lincoln/Mercury Marquis 3.8 V6.

I have put more than 50k miles on her with proactive maintenance program and it's running better than ever.

I just want to thank you all for helping me. As we all know, it's very difficult time for many of us including our family. You can call me "desperate" but I need my Swedish Baklava to take me to places where I need to be.

I have learned a lot about this car since then and enjoy learning more about it. My ultimate goal would be able to replace the head gasket by myself near future.

Once again, thank you so much!!!

I have never helped you. And I don't like where you park! Next to a 2 door? NEVER park next to a 2 door. And by all means, do park closer to the walkway line. Try to find a no ding zone at least. Walking is good for you. There, I helped you.

Put a temporary patch in the rusted floor before a foot goes through. Driver's side? Reminds me of the 78 245 my son had. I'd buy 5 tubes of PL Polyurethane construction adhesive and beat out some thin enough sheet metal to keep the water out and bodies in.

You mentioned old cars below. The old 79 Olds Delta 88, Royal btw, got 300K, 250K from me. It had a vinyl top too. Only normal minor issues. I let the boat sit longer and longer because it handled like a boat and finally it would not start. I let it sail away.

Hope you can get to the head gasket soon. I never did one, cant help there. Someone posted a link not too far down on a 20 or so part youtube video on a Volvo head gasket replacement. Helped again.

    Tom

Hiya Uncle Swedish Baklava (aka Flying Brick)!

Thank you for the nice message.

Hope you and your Swedish Baklava are all bright as a penny and right as rain today! Your Swedish Baklava looks a lovely blue in the image.

I note the headlamp lenses on your Swedish Baklava appear fogged or clouded? The adhesive securing the lens to the reflector 'bucket' may have failed and you have some moisture and biomatter intrusion into the headlamp interior. If the reflector is not damage, you may be able to dissemble it, clean the interior, polish the inside of the head lamp lens (though it is a pain in the duff working out stuff out of the reflector flutes and nook and crannies), and reassemble using the appropriate adhesive. I've used the Automotive, Marine, or RV versions of the Goop adhesive as these Goop versions are listed as UV resistant. However, Goop may not best adhesive for the heat the headlamps create in very hot weather. I've not ever had any problems on the two 240s I've treated this way.

You can tell the clear headlamp lens has separated from the reflector 'bucket' by pulling on the lens at the center front bottom edge and pulling forward.

What happened with your 85 Lincoln/Mercury Marquis 3.8 V6 that you got burned? Was that a bad Ford model or was it abused by prior owners.

Have you treated the rusty floor pan that looks like (Swedish) baklava? That can be a bother. Body work is not my forte and I do it out of necessity and all my body work looks like crap covered over in knock-off after market mimicked body color paint. If you have a rusty floor pan, please inspect corresponding seams where body panels are rolled together.

Cylinder head gasket replacement? Does the engine (presume a venerable B230) require a cylinder head gasket replacement.

No better place can you find answers to your 1987 Volvo 240 Swedish Baklava wagon then the brickboard.

And, of course, your Bentley Volvo 240 manual and such.

    Questions and comments?

    Happy Holiday Pie Season!

    cheers,

    Buttermilk

      Hi kittysgreyvolvo,

You asked me if I have a manual twice. I do, I got a Bentley manual. My wife almost fell off the chair when the book arrived. I haven't read something serious since I was a third grade/Wuthering Heights.

        Uncle Swedish Baklava,

Really? The Bentley Volvo 240 Bible is chock full of that serious drama like "Wuthering Heights"?

Maybe I need to get one for me someday soon. It's been Haynes, the OEM Volvo Green Manuals, and the occasional Chilton's.

I'd read other's Bentley Bibles for 240 quite some time ago specific to a repair or something.

I could use a good read.

Sorry to be redundant in asking you whether you have a service manual. So many on here seem not to own one as their 1982 242 DL suffers for some reason.

        Volvo 242s are COOL!

        Thank you,

        Buttermilk.

        Thank you, Uncle Swedish Baklava!

I like baklava. What does Swedish baklava taste like? Made with Norge (Norwegian) heather honey and various Nordic nuts?

Nordic nations are cool! Wish I had been born there. Norway, Finland, and even Sweden. Maybe Denmark, too?

        Thank you and cheers!

Come on, Tony! Don't be so shy. Only head gasket! :) I can't remember them all but here are few.

      1. Ate 1/2 cup of coolant every month; leaky head gasket.
      2. Water pump went every 30k miles.
      3. Oil leak.
      4. When you start the engine, it would rev up more than 5k rpm and won't come down. Shut the engine, restart and it idles fine.

Finally, our car died around 110,000 miles...
