Two fish swim into a concrete wall. The one turns to the other and says "Dam!".

What should I do with an intact original cat I don't need from a '79? I bought the manifold and entire exhaust off a local guy'sparts car for $50. Is it even legal to sell a used cat in any of the normal regualr states? I'm pretty sure it's not here.

Most lucrative to sell it for scrap? Never see used one's because they are all cut out before a car can even goes on display at the wrecking yard. My friends with Toyota trucks get then stolen when parked on the street in San Francisco.

Being in California I thought I better play it safe and replace my embarrassingly loud rattler with one with the correct numbers on it for my 84. I bought a Flowmaster. Passed smog with it on friday. My prior cheapie one lasted five years. That's good, cause it's the law! They are mandated to last five years, but I' not sure how that works.

I think my car has been reading the Brick Board and getting ideas.

    1. Last week, I had to replace the license plate light bulbs, becasue one had burnt out. Can't remember the last time I had to replace them, but I think it has been well over 15 years or so.

    2. For the last two weeks I have been meaning to look and see if the heat shield was loose, as I hear an occasional rattle, however, I hope it's not the same diagnosis as Art's car... Luckily, I do have a back up cat that I bought on sale, just in case.

    If it needs to be maintained, repaired or replaced on a 1990 240, I've probably done it. '90 240DL, 328,610 miles, will she make it to 400K ?? >>You haven't really worked on a car until you draw blood<< :-}

rear pipe broke off of the muffler the cat which is 5 years old with 100 k on it a BOSAL and I will be replacing it as well. Have inspection this month and I could smell that the cat was no longer working very well. But you get what you pay for as it was only 95 bucks+ shipping form TASCA 4 yrsa ago. Its now 115 plus shipping. NEW OEM cats are no longer available. I have the original one from 87 which paid for the replacement cat. Not sure what there using these days? Its not platinum though. Paladium possibly?

    Hi Art,

Whoa! I see what you mean by rattle.

Yup, I really didn't have to tap the converter very hard at all with a rubber mallet to locate the rattle. I wonder if the platinum reclamation guys will care that I've already begun their work for them.

Q: What is an electrician's favorite ice cream flavor?

      A: Shock-o-lot!

    Hi Art,

It's good to see photo evidence of what I post about occasionally. I don't remember mine being so nicely finished, but it was probably 15 years ago.

      Hi Bruce,

Yes, this behaved exactly as you have described, and your posts led me straight to the cat. It could be seen quite well from the outlet without slicing the housing, but getting a photo was another story. Very round.

      Thank you!

A jumper cable walks into a bar. The bartender says, "I'll serve you, but don't start anything."

    Hi Art,

Did you find this recently in the cat? What was happening exactly that pointed you in the direction toward checking the cat? And what brand of cat did you replace it with? If this is one of your older photos how is it holding up?

My Bosal cat on my 90 244 (daily driver) has been holding up well for 4 years now. In salty PA even.

    Thanks,

    Travis

      Hi Travis,

The symptoms began a couple months ago. While driving next to a wall, especially with the foot on the gas, a rattle could be heard, reminiscent of a loose heat shield on the exhaust system. But this car had none of that for years. I tapped on the cat with a rubber mallet, and could hear the guts bouncing. I ordered a replacement, but it sat for weeks awaiting more incentive than stopping a noise.

Last Thursday the car bogged seriously like it was constipated. We turned it toward home and took another 240. It really was quite easy to feel the clog and associate it with my image of what Lucid has described many times here. Just thought you'd all like to see what one looked like.

Can't tell you much about this Bosal's longevity. Only has 10 miles on it. But I used one on another car, I'm guessing about 50K ago or 5 years.
