re: "...it's all about maintenance. Fortunately, these 240s are simple to work on...."
Agreed wholeheartedly that they're so easy to work on, but my gripe is that parts are getting harder to come by.
Admittedly, there's no good volvo p-n-p to comb through, but I've always liked buying my parts new. Thanks to Ford's interim ownership and their philosophy of planned obsolescence, I blame them for curtailing the stockpiling of parts for these 240s. It's so much easier to get parts for a '70's 140 or for a P1800 (although I concede that their collectibility helps) than for our 240s.
Case in point, my '93 needs a overvoltage protection relay for the ABS system. It's out of stock. ABS is an important safety feature, yet Ford neglected to order an adequate supply of replacements. I can understand not building a supply of trim pieces, but for a vital safety component -- shame on Ford!
In addition, my daughter (at my urging) bought a '07 S60 2.5T brand new, and she's been having needs to bring it back far too many times. Her next car will not be Volvo, and I can't blame her.
Although I've owned Volvo's since we bought a new 164 in '73 (with some detours to M-B over the years), I'm really getting itchy to buy my next new cars from another make -- my wife and I have two '93 240s, and we're ready to buy another pair of new cars. Many others are proving better reliabiility, almost (not quite) equal safety, and I won't have the expectation of decades of longevity with those makes that Ford has violated disappointingly with the care of the Volvo brand. We're gravitating toward a new Forester (for myself) and a new Outback with the EyeSight option (for her, and for our camping trips).
