BUT-- What can possibly happen to the engine, mechanical and/or electrical once you stomp on the brakes so hard it causes the engine to die even tho the engine has been running extremely well before that happened? What can be affected?

Can it cause any sort of “vacuum” momentarily by things moving or “sloshing“, that can affect any sensor, even in the gas tank, even if it's just for a moment? Im talking about a VERY hard/fast stop from 20 mph to a dead stop as if hitting a brick wall, but with the brakes. Oh, there was also a very slight veer to the left when the fast stop took place.

Thanks for your speculations- if u have any.

I assume the starter still cranks but it just won't fire up. If the car has OBD, have you checked for fault codes after cranking? Maybe clear the codes, try cranking, and then pull codes again. It might just point you toward the problem.

Can you hear the fuel pump(s) run when you turn the ignition on? Is it getting spark to the plugs?

Ever since that happened, its basically when i started to get the problem with the fast idle. The car will start up and I can drive it. I spent many $$$ trying to get the car to run 'correctly' and the fast idle thing is ‘erratic’ now. Much better than at first. the fuel pumps are fine.

The computer things were looked at and there were 'signs' such as 3-1-1. After many $$, as I said, the wagon runs fairly well, much better than at first after the stop bUt that fast idle pops up now and then. believe me MANY things have been checked, ie: sensors, gauges. Even got a 'new' cluster, you name it. At one point the mechanic did say a fast stop could feasibly cause a sort of vacuum for the sensors for just a moment , nothing there to read so the sensor acts accordingly not knowing it was just a momentary fast stop. I hope that answers some of your questions for me. thanks.

I am thinking by now I best just forget it and live with what it is. . Only ‘cure’ seems might be a ‘new to me’ engine, but even that can come with its own ‘problems. Thanks everyone.

If your TPS setting is only a fraction from triggering the connection after the idle one, it may now and then complete the circuit and increase the revs. Your crash stop might have pulled on the cable a bit.
Plausible or not, it would be worth checking.

I did a 2nd gear panic stop with wheel lockup and engine stall a few years back with a 1986 b230f m46 and the car subsequently started jamming in second gear.I had a spare and changed the tranny.I opened the damaged gearbox and could not see any damage or bent parts .Whatever was wrong would probably be found with build specs and precise measuring devices.

Mainly, marginal stuff breaks and things come unplugged.

The most common problem is related to motor mounts and/or tranny mount separating. When that happens you engine can flop about in the engine bay unplugging things, putting a hole in the oil filter, maybe the fan hitting the radiator.

Usually, though it is none of these and the car just stalls and restarts.

    Nothing debilitating should have happened.
Why? What is or is not happening now?
