M47 'Slam Shift' Removal - Help please... 200 1990

Just bought a 90' 244 w/ M47 tranny. Runs like a top. Has some decent mods (bought it from a turbobricks regular).
Problem is the guy put some kit on the shifter or in the tranny to drag it. Said something about a metal plate?? He didn't actually install it himself. First and Second gear are a horrible pain to get into without really forcing it. Its a PITA. 3rd thru 5th are normal. Clutch operates perfectly too - synchros seem fine.

Anyone ever deal with this or hear of it? And, how do i get rid of it? Thanks!

There is a reverse detent plate that may need adjusting.

Wow. Just checked it and it goes right into first and second after pulling up on the ring as the thread said. I emailed the previous owner and he said the guy who did the 'mod' said it was an adjustment to a plate. Why someone would do that on purpose is beyond me...

Thanks Dan! The great amount of amassed knowledge on the brickboard is absolutely priceless!

I don't understand what the mod would be but if you adjust the plate a little to the left it should work fine.

He said he drag raced it and said it was to do with that. Makes no sense. Thanks again!

Possibly the lockout plate was adjusted that way to avoid hitting 1st gear by mistake when going for 3rd in the heat of a race. -- Dave

I once bought a BMW 2002ti that was "Drag Raced"

with double solex carbs.....make a long story short (dumped the Solexes for a Weber) but the engine burned oil like a MTF...rebuilt....still ....

Avoid Raced Cars....you are buying someone elses happy times and you are paying the price.

Make sure the shifter bushings are OK before calling the detent plate adjustment a fix!
