Front Strut install maybe DONE 200

Okay, I did the strut installation and I have a question...

Everything went just as planed however, I think (i think) that the top 15/16 strut nut is not tight enough to the bearing mount. I can not seem to tighten the nut any further and it appears that there is a slight space between the bottom of the nut and the top of the bearing. I only have an impact socket and not a the offset wrench. So my question is, can I hold the strut below with a vise grip and then try to re tighten the nut?

I hope that there are still some threads left on the strut to do so. The new nut that came with the Sacs struts were NOT the short nuts but tall ones. So I do not think a washer was needed.

The car runs like silk on the freeway but getting on the side roads and hitting those cracks or variations between sections, sounds like the front end is going to fall apart. Sounds like metal hitting metal.

Try a washer under the nut, this fixed the clunking for me and several others.

Looked into this problem again tonight and decided that as long as the nut was bottomed out and not tight to the bearing mount, I figured I could take off the nut without the strut disengaging or anything else.

I see that the shaft of the strut is about a 1/4 inch + above the bearing mount.
So that is why the nut was all the way down but the shaft is longer.
Why would this be? I was careful to check that the new strut measured the same as the old and yet the shaft sticks out more on the top. Would the new bellows and rubber bump (KYB) be the problem?
Anyway I think the washer idea will work if I can just find the right ones with an inside diamiter to fit over the non threaded portion of the shaft.

Any other thoughts to this delema? feel free to post.

I seem to remember a number of posts about folks forgetting the washer on the top of the strut but before the bearing...not sure what series it was and not sure if that is your problem. In both case the folks involved SWORE there was no washer but when sent to investigate their old bearings, they found the washer embedded in the rubber on the bottom.

I hope this is not it as you will be doing most of your work over to correct it if it is.

Any good hardware store or tractor supply would probably have what you need. Auto parts probably not.

            Hi,

Yes, washer #986488 is what you want. It might be wise to get a total of four. And use two per side as some have-I think I did this past time I did the suspension on my 90 244. If getting it from a regular dealer get ready to shell out $4 per washer. I think they are $0.90 each from Tasca-only worth it if you have other stuff to order due to shipping.

Your best bet though might be the Tractor Supply Company chain-they have what you need in the metric hardware section (not exact as OEM washer, but will fit) it is bagged as a "bushing" if I remember correctly.

            Hope that helps,

            Travis

Just wondering if I put the washers under the top strut nut, instead of removing the whole unit again to put it before the bearing mount, will I be causing any safety issues or premature break down of the struts?

Note: I did find the correct metric washers and have placed them under the top nut. It has solved the problem but as above I am concerned.

              Thanks

                Hi,

I would leave it the way you have it. I personally have not heard of washers directly under the strut mount.

I remember looking at a Volvo parts diagram which showed the washer between the upper spring perch and the strut mount bearing. I cannot find it now, of course.

In any case, I don't think it matters much; It will be pressed against the bearing on one side or the other. I'll certainly let the board know if putting the washer under the bearing causes any issues.

I just did a strut today and really examined the issue. The strut I took apart did not have the washer, and at first, it didn't look like it was necessary. But using the old strut, off the car, and a spare spring perch and strut mount, I used the impact wrench to run the lock nut down as far as it would go. I don't know about other strut cartridges, but on the KYB Excel-G (GR2) the washer is definitely needed. The extra room is not much, but it is enough that the top nut will bottom out before tightening the bearing down.

To answer your question, I see no reason that the washer on top of the bearing would put any more stress on it than if it were on the bottom, between that and the spring perch. You should be fine.

Thanks for added reserch! I think it will be fine too.
These Sachs gas struts must be similar to those KYB's.
Sounds like I have the same small amount that caused the nut to bottom
                  out.
Anyway thanks again for your thoughtful comparisions on the the struts and washers.
                  Jw
