key will not go into ignition 200 1990

1990 245
Got done replacing an ignition switch today on a car that has sat for 3 o 4 months and when I went to try and start it the key wouldn't even go into the hole. I can get a small flat head screw driver to pry the metal pieces apart but the key wont go in at all. Seems strange. I don't think the ignition switch would have anything to do with it. Any ideas?

Don't take this too unkindly but are you using the correct key? Maybe the old key in the new switch? I've taken the wrong set of keys out to a car and taken a few fuzzy moments before realising why the key won't fit.
A bit of steering wheel movement sometimes needed to clear the steering lock before the key will go in. Yes I know, basics, but we all get caught out sometimes.

Friends Volvo but the key matched the year although he had a 70's 245 years ago so there is that small chance but it looks like the same key I've used in the past when trying to figure out the issue..

I'm having a tough time thinking that just by taking off the ignition switch that I have somehow messed up the lock. I mean it was two small screws that allow it to come off. But then again anything is possible. I was hoping I wasn't the first one with this issue.

Remove the switch and try the lock without it. Or put back the old switch and test again, it's just 2 screws, right. If it works with old one then something is different with the new switch. That's what I would do.

          Hi,

          I agree with Nel621.

Also, is your switch for 90-93 and not an earlier switch?

would it make a difference if the switch was installed upside down? Would the lock really know the difference between it being one direction compared to the other. From what I can tell the ignition switch electrical just has the little button that gets pushed by the lock/key.

I don't think it would matter to the key. You might be able to install it upside down but I think it would be difficult to get the electrical connector on the switch upside down.

If the key also used to open the doors and still does, then the lock is messed up.

Anything stuck in the key hole? Spare key?

i have watched locksmiths open up ignition locks..... NOT the switch.... before to reset the tiny tabs. this is done to permit the key to a specific car to now fit the ignition lock which was installed from another car that originally had a different key.

it is actually quite interesting to watch.

from what i understood for instance all volvo 240 lock start out the same. the only difference is the tiny tabs and how they are positioned with the lock.

my guess is while you were making your repairs one or more of these positioning tabs which determine which key will fit which lock moved or fell out of position.

if true unless you remove the ignition lock and actually open it up and reset these tabs or have someone else do it you're out of luck.
