Front fog Light Installation 200 1990

What's the deal?... How easy is it to install them on a 240 that didn't have them put on from the factory? What really has to be done, and can you buy them aftermarket?... I see the Bosch ones everywhere, and you'd obviously have to get the entire assembly, but do you need a cover for the back of the light? I assume it's tied into the switch that illuminates the rear fog lights.. Or not. Never had that feature on a 240, so I don't know... thanks

The after market fog lights are fully enclosed. Just need a good 12V source not to mention a switch location. These should come with a relays

Driving lights work kind of in conjunction with the brights, for just more light. Mount two street legal 55 watt lights on your bully bar, or at least on top of the bumper. Turn off with oncoming traffic.

True fog lights are a pair of 55 watt white lights that casts a flat beam, must shine low under the fog and close to the road with some light shining on the road to see the lines but not cause a reflection back up to the fog. The perfect place would be in front of the bumper (bad idea) or below the bumper. When aimed correctly fogs can stay on with oncoming traffic. The key is a proper beam spread.

Edit add: I think most of aftermarket fogs are meant to be mounted upright, on top of, but check.

    Tom

Volvo has a nice little instruction manual that comes with the 240 acessory fog lamp kit, gives differences for year, location of holes in bumper to mimic the factory installation and the switch and relay wiring. I have a manual somewhere but am too busy to dig up and scan.
I'm sure you can find it on the internet somewhere.

The biggest job is drilling the hole into the bumper, IIRC it is bigger than 3/8 and needs a 1/2 drill and jack up the car to gain clearance and go through 1/4" alumnimum. You also need to drill a hole for each lamp wire in the air dam

I just installed some inexpensive Harbor Freight driving lights on the 92 240 and it was easy, the lights mounted in the outside bottom holes where the torx bolts are and I wired them to fog light switch above the headlight switch. Grounded the lights to the relay rail on the drivers side and ran the hot wire to the switch. Power came from tapping the #13 fuse (heated seat fuse I believe) and drilled a small hole through the firewall to run the wire from the switch. Really easy and the cool thing is that the fog light switch lights when turned on and power is cut when the key is turned off. Wiring my son's 93 tomorrow for the lights as well (they are around $15 a pair)

If the little switch in the dash that was intended for the rear 21watt foglamp is now carrying it plus the 110watts of two front foglamps, it won't last long. Consider rewiring to have that switch operate a relay which carries the current for the front foglamps.

Interesting... and they work good in the fog?

Yes, they cut through the fog well, were inexpensive and look just like the factory ones. A great improvement. below is the link to the ones I picked up at HF.

Buy front fog lights, brand of choice. Drill hole in front bumper to hold said lights.Run wires back to a relay and interior fog light switch. Then enjoy someone backing up into said lights and breaking one of them. Nothing to it.
