Ignition Switch Archive Repair 200 1992

Hi,

Just replaced the ignition switch in the 92 245 yesterday. Now that I have the old one out I un-crimped the housing to take a look at it and I seem to remember something in the BB archives I had read about repairing the old ignition switch.

Does anyone else remember this and could they provide a link? I searched the archives but couldn't find anything.

Anyone help would be great as I would like to see if I could rehab this old one to use as a replacement in the future.

Thanks,

Travis

What problem were you having that it needed replacement?

Hi,

The chime and also my installed voltmeter (which is hooked up to the chime per Art's directions) wouldn't work unless you pushed in on the key a bit. My wife is the primary driver and she said sometimes the radio would shut off. Right before I installed the new switch I had just filled up at the gas station, started the car, pushed on key (to get the voltmeter to work) and the car shut off.

Mine had been having a headlight issue for awhile now,but that has stopped for over a year. But now a few times no voltmeter or radio on startup! Move the key slightly and all is fine. I have been procastinating replacing but with winter coming on again it might be time to just replace it.Its worked well for 25 years now!! FCP for best price I think?

Hi Joe,

You might want to start thinking about replacing it. I got mine from eEuroparts. Make sure you get the right one you need for your model year. A 90-93 switch from eEuroparts was $82 I think.

Hey Travis,

If it is any consolation, I do remember the post. That was a long time ago. I also remember ruining a perfectly good switch at the PnP for my edification -- wanted to see how it worked, ya know.

Wish I could clue you in on the correct search terms, but I know I've used the correct ones before and still struck out. Like the scanned files have holes. Anyway, the trick, once you get past greasy springs, balls, and silver contacts, is getting the pot metal housing re-crimped around the bakelite. That's a skill mostly owned by the older and cheaper among us, and yet still known to be an iffy thing.

Hi Art,

Popped the old one open, to take a look at, clean the contacts and such. I knew when un-crimping the housing it looked like it was going to be a long shot to re-crimp it as it gets mangled pretty good it seems no matter how careful you are.

Travis
