Kickdown cable symptoms to detect failure 700 1989

Have read in the FAQs that a 'clunk' should be heard coming from the transmission itself (AW71L) upon pulling up,then releasing the tension of the cable. However on mine, no 'clunk','clink', nada!
Does this mean that my kickdown cable is worn out? What are the symptoms of a worn out kickdown cable?
My other posts about 'ball trouble' in this same transmission leads me to suspect a messed up kickdown cable instead of worn out 5.5mm plastic balls.
Thanks for any help.

The cable does not really where is out...usually. It get gunked up and the inner cable does not move in the the sheath or the arm in the tranny gets stuck and does not move. I am not real expert on either, but I do remember the fix for the binding cable is lots of light lubricant making sure it makes it in between the cable and sheath and penetrates alllllll the way down.

Thanks,OUII:
I lubricated it using PBLaster. The problem is that the crimped on stop in front of the cable was placed too close to the entrance near the throttle. I removed the crimped on 'stop' and now I can hear the 'clunk' inside the transmission. I buttoned up everything, added 3 qts of Dextron, and now it seems to shift a lot better. No sticking in 1st, with concomitant high RPM's. Smooth shifting through all the rest of the gears. I'll try it out on the highway after I get it past the state inspection (since it has sat for so long).
