good front end shop near Bronx, NY? 900

I've been getting gradually worse front-end vibrations at highway speeds, and have purchased the IPD poly cone bushings and new ball joints. But between the weather getting colder and my schedule getting crazy, I might need to break down and take it someplace for the job. I live just down the street from a Mavis Tire, but they've done so many bad jobs in the past that I can't bear to go there again to part with my money! Anyone in the NY metro area (pref. Bronx) out there who knows a reputable shop for front end work? Have a suspicion that I may need strut mounts too...

Thanks!

I don't know of any "good" front in shops either in the Bronx or elsewhere. In 26 years of rolling a 240 wagon I have never needed a "front end shop". I suggest you take the car to either a Volvo Dealer or else to a Volvo specialist. The Specialist I have been using is Mike's Volvo Clinic, 216-02 Hempstead Avenue, Queens Village, NY 11429 (718) 468-5855. The Q44 bus runs to the Bronx and from where it stops in Jamaica you can get either a City Bus to Queens Village (transfer to Q56 eastbound at Sutphin Blvd. and Jamaica Avenue to Parsons Blvd. then transfer to Q110 to Queens Village or take the LIRR to the Queens Village station from its Jamaica Station.

I think new shock struts will solve your front end problems unless it lies in your tires and rims. The poly cone bushings only compound the problem of an imblanced wheel/tire combination or a bad shock strut. Also non-Volvo or high end European shock struts can result in a difficult ride. Any competent Volvo mechanic should be able to identify and correct your problem immediately. Don't waste your money at Mavis or any other bottom feeding organization. If you search this site you may be able to find Volvo specialist in the Bronx or Westchester as well.

Thanks for the info and insights - I think Queens is a little far for me, but I've since found a Volvo guy in Larchmont who I might take it to. I had struts done on the car about 20k ago - but at Mavis, so there's no guarantee at all they're still good. I noticed there's a small amount of play from left to right on the driver's wheel, which I know is not the tie rod end, since I did those myself a couple of years ago. And the tires are wearing evenly, no side wear at all - so I assume the ball joints are ok. So I guess that leaves the struts/mounts. I don't think the cone bushings would affect the toe of the wheel, right?

You could also try mounting the rear tire/wheels on the front wheels and see if the vibration goes away. If it does, then perhaps the belts have shifted in the tire(s) and will have to be replaced. Just a quick thought. Good Luck and Keep Rollin'!

Thanks for the extra tip! I did rotate the tires, and the vibration is still there - but I've noticed it's less prominent with the snow tires on. The summer tires were another Mavis job - go figure. Might put the snows on early this year and see what happens...
