My 960 was running smooth as velvet and then began having idle problems. At a red light or stop sign the idle would surge between 500-1500 rpm. Once or twice the engine died but started up right away. Then it began missing on one, then two, then three cylinders. I checked connections and vacuum hoses under the hood. I pulled codes 212, 233, and 223. But all of those codes cleared up. With the check engine light not lit up, I limped into a friend's garage. He is pretty good, but still he spent three days before solving the problem. He said he used a measuring unit, must be 999-3070, to check the continuity of the lines into the ECU. He says that I had a couple of coil wires crossed up, but I am very careful when checking the coils.
One odd thing that I did not mention to him is that the cruise control had stopped working before the idle problem came up. But now after he finished, I have cruise control. I do not want to bore you all, but I bring this up because I learned that the simple process of separating connectors and reconnecting them seemed to solve this driveability problem. My engine is back to running smooth as velvet.
For what it is worth. And thanks for all your help over the years with different problems.
One last thing. Is that measuring unit still available anywhere? Seems like a useful tool.
