Most Pleasantly Surprised 200

I was on a bit of a fishing trip today. I need new rear shocks for my 240, beyond needing them, its quite silly looking going down the road. I went just to humor myself, in to Car Quest (I've never been there) to get a price and to see what brands they have. My first shoc was that they have, in stock, KYB, and was the FIRST one suggested. So I asked about the price (getting ready for sticker shock) when I was rather shocked. They have the standard KYB for this car for $25 ea. Before I could ask about any others, he then suggested the heavy duty KYB's, for only $32 ea. This was too good of deal that I have seen so I ordered them (the heavy duty were not in stock). So by next week my 240 will no longer be a bounce house!

    -UPDATE-

So this was in September, here it is now early May and I am finding myself with a little buyers remorse. Yes I did need new shocks, yes I was on a low budget but this is NOT what I expected even from a low cost shock. They are leaking. Yes the ride seems to be ok still, that has not changed. I was under the car looking at something else when I noticed a massive build up of dirt on them. This is they type of dirt that you would see clinging to oil. My only assumption is leaking shocks. I can understand 1 of them, maybe defective but both at the same time and after only a little over 7 months? Hell no. So now what?

So KYB supposedly has a lifetime warranty, this is good, I am getting them replaced for free. This time, if it happens again I am upgrading to something else.

My guess is that you'll have an encore performance with the same results. But good luck!

Well if I do, I will say something about it on here, and then upgrade to something better. You get what you pay for?

My father has used KYB Gas-a-just shocks on the rear for about ten years. They may not feel like new anymore, but no worse than any other brand at that age.

I have a wagon with KYB all around and I think it is a great feeling shock. Compliant on rough roads, but firm enough during quick changes. Have not seen any evidence of leakage.

There is a lot of KYB hate going around the board lately. I think it is very much undeserved, and before it becomes part of "The Lore," allow me to say that I like the KYB GR-2 and Gas-a-just shocks.

I can understand that. Its the gas-a-just that I have now that are only 7 months old and leaking yet they still feel just fine. This is more a matter of principle than anything else, I am willing to give them a second chance. Do they make strut inserts for the front? Those I have no idea how old they are and I will probably be replacing them soon along with some other suspension upgrades.

My KYBs are seemingly doing well. Hard to measure shock wear, but I guess the fact they have been doing well keeps me from finding out how the newly minted ones do. In the end, after 12 years reading this list, the only shock advice I remember well enough to heed is, steer clear of Bilstein Touring. And I wouldn't be surprised if that advice has aged out too.

    Uncle PhoenixFire,

Replacement KYBs will do fine for a few years. They are no longer the durable performance dampeners (either the Gas-A-Just or the GR-2) they used to be.

KYB "Heavy Duty" model? I'll have to look that up.

But they are at least better, if not the same as say, a Monroe brand shock (dampener).

Next time, try Boge Automatics. Maybe twice or three times the price, yet they'll last much longer and respond much better.

Good luck on your purchase and I hope your KYBs perform as good as they used to!

    Happy Volvo-ing.

    cheers,

    My House is Buttermilk Free.
