95 Volvo wagon, turn signals not working 900 1995

Hello. I am about to start working on my aunts 95 Volvo station wagon. I don't know the exact series number since I haven't gotten my hands on the car yet. I am a fairly competent home mechanic with lots of experience, just not with Volvos.

My aunt's main complaint is that the turn signals no longer work on the vehicle and that the battery drains if the car sits for a few weeks. I have done some preliminary research online and I believe the problem may caused by a faulty hazard switch or turn signal switch. Do those sound like the potential problems? If so, can someone tell me how to test and replace these and where I can find a new one for a good price? Even rockauto wants $70+ for these switches.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

Reed

P.S. anybody have a source for low-cost factory service manuals for a 95 Volvo? I am not finding any on eBay and I don't want to waste my money on a Haynes or a Chiltons.

    Hi,

The weakest link in a directional system is the relay. The cost is usually under $10, so it makes it a good place to start rather than switches.

I have purchased several after market manuals and found them to be inadequate for a lot of repairs. Schematics for the electrical system can be found on the web. You will need this because Volvo’s have some electrical issues, mostly with the OBD system. This site and others can give you ideas on how to complete repairs needed in the future.

Thanks for the responses. I realize now that I probably posted this in the wrong area. i believe the wagon is a front wheel drive 850. I think I should be able to figure out the problem with the information I have received. Thanks to all who helped.

Better than some service manuals is the 700/900 FAQ.

Thanks. I am still trying to figure out how to navigate the board. I'll see if I can't find my answer there.

I'd not be too quick to toss out the Haynes British version, if the car is a 940. If it's an 850 however I don't know what to suggest.

Just like the 940's, the Haynes British version is fine as a basic repair manual for 850's. Been pretty helpful to me on my 95. Factory or Bentley (if available) would be better though. Factory is available online from Volvo but I don't know where else...

The switch mechanism might be jamming up. My 95 does this once in a while. Try spraying the switch with some electrical spray before replacing it.
