re: 87 245 auto - rebuilding harmonic balancer 200 1987

Hi All

Just a thought? Can I do this? Inject dots of gorilla glue using turkey basting syringe... Just like jelly donut.

      Hi Jerry

Thank you but I already order one last night... My plan is to fix up my old balancer and keep new one in my trunk for back up.

But as Mike said, "if it lets go it could get ugly".

For innumerable reasons, no, please don't do that.

I asked some time ago whether the B230 harmonic balancer crankshaft pulley bushing could be replaced be pressing out the old and pressing in a new bushing. No such kit exists. The thread response when into the crankshaft construction between the drop forged crank of say, like the B23,21, and so forth versus the low friction B230 equipped cast iron crank shaft and why a B230 requires a sound and fit harmonic balancer crankshaft pulley.

Search your local salvage yards for a better example from a newer B230 in a 240 or some 700/900. Verify the replacement is the same offset back to front with your failed B230 harmonic balancer crankshaft pulley. Some B230 harmonic balancer crankshaft pulley off models different than the 240 may sit reward.

You may get lucky and find a B230 with a replaced harmonic balancer crank pulley. I have.

Else, buy new from Tasca or the knock variant from, oh, I forget. The one you find at FCP Groton and iPD.

    You can't fit a solid metal crank from a B19/21/23 onto a B230.

Doing it cheap does not work.

Hopefully you can find a used B230 harmonic balancer crankshaft pulley in better condition than yours.

    cheers,

      Hi kittysgreyvolvo

Yes, I read your old thread... Am I penny wise and pound foolish? :) How do they put that together at the factory in the first place?

I don't think gorilla glue would hold. Maybe, space shuttle tile glue. Before you weld the two parts find out why your car has a harmonic balancer.

      Hi Tom

"Performance enthusiasts have been known to remove harmonic balancers, usually when the balancer is attached to the crank pulley, deciding that they aren't necessary and their mass reduces the performance of the engine. However, this is unproven and potentially very risky because the danger of damage to the engine from the vibrations the damper is intended to prevent is too high"

      Thank you as always.

    More like a concrete donut.

Sounds like an idea - let us know how it goes :)

      Hi mtd240

      "More like a concrete donut."

May be I will paint them like a donut with sprinkles. I will write a report but it will take sometime. I work very very slow.

    It's an idea worth trying.

The older crank pulleys are solid and don't have a rubber insert, yet work fine. So, if I didn't have spares, I'd consider welding the two sections together.

      Hi Trev29

Welding sounds good too. I am trying to figure out what's the best way to keep them concentrically aligned during glue curing...
