Ignition amplifier 200 1991

I've had an ongoing issue with hesitation while driving. If I shut the engine off, then turn it on again, the problem seems to go away. The problem is very dangerous in a heavily trafficked area. I suspect it's my ignition amplifier. Can someone tell me how to test it? Can I repair it or must I replace it? Thanks!

Pam

ANSWER If you do replace the amplifier .... 200 1991

I can't comment on whether your ignition amplifier is faulty, but if you do go ahead and replace it, be sure to coat the bottom with heat-conductive grease -- the amplifier produces a LOT of heat and it must be cooled by transfering that heat to the car's sheet metal which serves as a radiator. The grease, or paste, facilitates that transfer or conduction. If you don't use the grease, the new amplifier will quickly overheat and fail.

Good luck.

I'm considering installing a computer heat sink between the IA and the body. The heat sink should do a better job.

I do not see an " igniton amplifer" listed with our usual part suppliers .. FCP Groton or IPD. Who stocks them? BTW .. the heat sink grease is necessary and if it is not included RadioShack has it in a small tube.

Hi,

Here is the part:

http://www.fcpgroton.com/product-exec/product_id/9362/nm/Volvo_240_Ignition_Module_1989_1993_/category_id/227

even cheaper:

http://www.fcpgroton.com/product-exec/product_id/9362/nm/Volvo_240_Ignition_Module_1989_1993_/category_id/227

and for cheaper, find a used Bosch one on Ebay-one where the seller accepts returns if it is defective.
