Rex/Regina Cold Start and Idle 900 1993

OK everyone, got the 93 running really well, pulls great (well as great as 114 hp can pull 3000 lbs!).

Issue is, first start of the day takes 2 tries to get it fired, then it idles like a bar tender shaking James Bonds martini for a minute or so, then settles down. Runs great otherwise, as I stated pulls real well, idles smooth (or as smooth as red blocks do) subsequent starts are fine, 1 hit of the starter and she goes into a nice idle.

What have I done:
- Checked/replaced some iffy vacuum lines.
- Checked wires/plugs for loose connections, not torqued down since head gasket job 6 months back. All is well.
- Had poor running overall a few weeks back, replaced map sensor (had start issue prior to this), cured low power issue.
- FAQ says for poor cold starts w/Regina replace FPR, mine seemed to registor low so since mine was 19 years old, 65 bucks and 20 minutes got me a new one installed. I have 36 psi at idle, disconnecting vac line, gives me ~40 psi, not the 43.5 psi that is called for. Fuel pump getting tired?.
- Radio suppression relay is new.
- Cleaned and set throttle (again), got it right this time, no hesistation from standing start. Made sure all vac ports were not clogged.
- Fuel filter has less than 10,000 miies on it.
- Lots of searching says this problem isn't uncommon on these older cars.

I'm thinking the idle air control valve (which I cleaned) might be sticky after a long sit overnight?

Anyone else got any thoughts, need 2 or 3 more years out of this wagon as my daughter drives it, it's only got ~175 kmiles on it, so it's just broken in.

Sorry to be so long, but figure I'd lay it out there.

Mike

How is the boot from the mass meter to the throttle body? We had trouble starting in cold weather here in MN and found an obscure hole in the boot. It is a great starter after replacing the boot. I'm sure it leaky boot could cause other problems as well. Also, how about cleaning the throttle body? The idle air control valve could also be sticking like you mention, although I've never had one stick in my 12 240s, 740s, and 940s.

Also, check the switch on the Throttle body to make sure it makes contact (ohmmeter) at idle and drops contact at higher than idle. It should click when it goes to idle or off idle (can hear it with engine off) but continuity should be checked.

        JD 620,

Thanks for the tips, I'll check the boot over the next few days. Throttle switch seems fine, but I did not check continuity.

        Mike
