No restart 760 900

82 yr old mother driving her 1989 760 non turbo sedan with 120000 miles. No issues, stopped at post office would not restart. Has lights (no dimming while turning key), no sound at all. Mechanic came to tow, tried to jump starter solenoid, no power, car in neutral. I tried jiggling the shifter while starting, nothing. Any thoughts on where to start, I do not know the 760 series well at all? I'm limited physically but can pass along suggestions to mechanic.
Thanks as always in advance.

    "tried to jump starter solenoid"

Not 100% sure what you mean by this. There are a couple of options for a no-crank situation:

    1) Failure to send the low-amp signal from the ignition switch to the solenoid.
    2) Failure of the solenoid to engage
    3) Failure of the high-amp power to flow from the battery to the starter through the solenoid
    4) Failed starter

The first one is often the starter lock-out or the ignition switch, but the problem normally come on slowly. The small wire to the solenoid could have also failed.

The second is a sticking solenoid which can be test by tapping on it with a long handled something while starting or a broken wire in the solenoid which can only be tested by applying power directly to the starter with a large gauge wire like jumper cables.

The third can be corroded or internally broken positive or negative cable. This is very hard to diagnose but not uncommon. Someone mentioned a resistance test in a recent post.

Failed starters according to many are not that uncommon although I have never experienced one. Art B says it is because I mostly had the older style starter and because I have never had a "spray and pray" rebuild in any of my cars.

I hope that helps even if it does not narrow it down all that much.
