speedometer not working after fixing odometer 200 1983

my odometer gear broke, got a new gear, put everything back together(so i thought). Now my speedometer does not work. I pulled the speedo cable from the back of the cluster and held the cable while driving. It did not rotate. I unscrewed it from the box (don't know the name). it sits just left and below of steering wheel. It has two wires that plug into the instrument cluster, which are. I put the cable back in thinking maybe it got loose. What am i missing?
I'm not a much of a mechanic, but i enjoy working on the car. my wife prefers i take the car to someone instead.
On the bright side, my odometer works great.
Thanks

sandy

Pull the gauge out and examine the steel cup that turns the needle. It is magnetically driven by the same motion that operates the odometer, so it has to be something simple you can see. If you had the gauge apart in a work area where iron filings may have been attracted to the magnet, you'll want to look for those which will interfere with it.
