Ball Trouble-AW 71L Transmission 700 1989

I recently installed an AW71L transmission from the PNP into my 89 740 non-turbo. It worked well until the car started slipping out of 3rd gear on the highway. Consulting the FAQ, my son had the tranny filter changed and fluid replaced.Works on highway OK. Now it is having a hard time shifting up to second from first (but only when the car is cold right after startup, when warmed up, shifts great). I have adjusted the kickdown cable but still not shifting. I suspect the plastic balls in the pressure valve are worn out. I plan to replace them according to the FAQ directions, but am wondering if the following Green Manual is the correct one to use:
"Automatic Transmissions : BW55 AW55 AW70 AW71 Engines

Repairs and Maintenance Service Manual

Section 4 - Group 43"

It is for sale on eBay.
Thanks for any help.

If you do decide to rip into the trans the correct book is TP 31642/1, Section 4 (43), Automatic Transmissions AW70/70L, AW71/71L, AW72L.
This is the one I have and used it when I service the valve body on my 940 (I wrote the FAQ BTW).
There is very little in the way of guidance to servicing the valve body in the book but the images and torque settings are invaluable, particularly when putting it back together.

      Thanks, Blue:
I feel that I will have to do the ball and kickdown cable replacement on my AW71L. Therefore, I appreciate the FAQ diagrams that you wrote. I have one question for you: where can I buy the correct Green manual? Do I have to go to the dealer? Or does Amazon or even a public library have one?
Again, thank you for your help.

Volvo Tech Pubs shows it as out of stock. Probably Amazon, Bookfinder.com, or EBay.

          Thanks, Steve:
I'll look for it on Amazon, as eBay only has the AW30-71 (to 1988 on 240 Volvo). I wish some enterprising BBer would scan and then sell it as an upload. I recently bought the Honda CRV shop manual for $17 on CD form.
          Sincerely,

You may not have to make yourself crazy looking for the later book. If that book covers the AW70-71 as well as the L versions, the book you have should do as well for you. The 70/71 is essentially a 55 with a planertary gearset added to the front to provide OD. The "L" versions added a mechanical lock-up torque converter. -- Dave

              Thanks, VFH:
I can buy the AW55,70,71 Green manual from eBay. I'll spring for it if you think that the directions for replacing the balls in the valve body PLUS the directions and photos in the FAQ are sufficient for a newbie to this procedure. I have changed many a filter screen in an AW70 (I even had to use a gasket making hammer and a manila folder to make a gasket once).
              Thanks again.

If you are taking things apart here's something you might want to consider--or maybe others would care to comment -- or have direct knowledge of. Years ago while working at a Volvo indy shop and doing a service on an AW70 the owner of the shop commented that the main difference between the 70 and 71 was that the 71 had two hydraulic "cushions" deleted to get crisper "turbo" shifts. When the valve body is dropped you can see two veritcal chambers that each contain a thin "piston" with an "O" ring wrapped around the perimeter on the 70 model. He said the 71 doesn't have these. I've owned a few turbos but never had reason to drop the valve body to confirm this and never modified a 70 to check the results. -- Dave

Since the AW71L that I have shifts great except between 1 and 2, I plan to only replace the one ball.
Before I take the whole thing apart,I will try just replacing the screen filter and new fluid. I am running a can of Trans-X for high milage trannys in it now to loosen deposits. Dropping the pan, replacing the filter and adding new fluid, along with a flush via the cooling line may solve the problem. But if not,I plan to tear into the guts.
                  Thanks again,
                  el Raidman

Try the easy stuff first: AutoRx treatment in the tranny, fluid flush, etc. to get any varnish out.
