M46 shifter bushing install woes 200 1986

Just installed my 'new' M46 tranny replacing my AW71. My current problem is that I placed new shifter bushings in the shifter fork and now I can't pass the retaining pin fully in place. I can only get it across to its full seated position about 80% of the way because it's so tight. For now, I'm going to place the locking screw and hope the pin doesn't back out. As tight as it is now, I don't think it will. Any suggestions or comments will help greatly.

I tried to push it back out, but no luck. So I was able to push it in about another mm or so and replaced the lock screw snuggly. I recheck it next oil change (soon). My concern now is that when I need to replace the clutch or rear main seal and have to pull the tranny, I won't be able to get the pin out. :-(

I'll pop it out and try some lube on it.......Thanks for the suggestion. This project has sorta fried my brain. The exact install of the M46 on my son-in-law's 245 went smooth as silk.......this one, just like sandpaper...#100 grit!

While we're on the topic of sandpaper, a little might do the trick here too, or maybe some scotch brite. Clean up that pin. It might be a bit corroded from years of water, salt, & grime. That, plus the lube, should help it slide right in. It did the trick on my car.

Hello Xray
this does not make sense to me. they can be a pain with all new bushings and orings.
i dont think it will last long the way you have it.
is it greased up good?
hope you get it sorted out.
good luck
mike

I fully agree with "hardknocks!" -- there's a reason the pin has a slot for the set screw to engage. The job will not become easier when you lose the pin on the road. -- Dave
