Trunk Support Struts 200 1990

The trunk support struts on my 90 240 are a bit weak. I have a new set, but replacement has stumped me. It's not the easy job like on the wagons. I did a search and read some of the suggestions about binding the old struts with zip ties. They are supposed to just fall out when you open the trunk. But in my case the zip ties just break. Any other trips or tricks that might be helpful here? Thanks

Sure seems I read about someone's clever trick on this before, but not having need for it, I guess I lost it. Here's what Volvo has on the subject. Looks like inspiration for the bracket method.

Duct tape is like 'The Force'. It has a light side and a dark side, and it holds the universe together.

Zip ties come in a variety of sizes and strengths. Sturdier ones might work.
We are talking about compression on the order of 100#.
Far as that goes, if you can't get the old ones out, how will you get the new ones in?
(I made a steel bracket that holds them compressed. It is also hard to get the BRACKET out!)
