242 mystery 200 1983

Just bought a 1983 242 turbo. The car does not have an intercooler installed. Yet on the trunk directly above the word TURBO you can see the shadow of the word intercooler. I know that not all 1983 242 had an intercooler. I am not sure what is the deal. Was there an intercooler installed originally and removed for some reason, or did some fender head just put an intercooler sticker on the car. How can i tell

Thanks

That badge is either one borrowed from a 7-series OR the one that came with early IC kits for 240s. In other words, if an IC was added after the fact, there was an IC badge with the kit. For sure the car came without an IC. However it had at least the badge and/or the IC for a while anyway. Easiest would have been to stick the badge on without doing the work of installing the kit. As I recall, early 7-series sometimes carried an IC badge too, so that could have been the source.

I guess you can't believe everything you read, hey?... I had an 83 242 with a steering wheel that said turbo... Sure as heck didn't have one under the hood. Oh well, I ignored it...

Third option is that the trunk came from another car. Any signs of accident damage?

Either way, my understanding is that adding the intercooler is a breeze. Sadly, the used one from the junk yards are pretty much all gone since the tuner crowd realized it had some of the largest surface area of any junkyard intercooler.
