740 92 turbo power steering hose repair

1992 740 turbo wagon. My power steering hose which leads to the steering rack has rusted and broken. Is there any way to repair without replacing the entire rack? My shop mechanic said NO. I have too many good parts in this car to let it go. Its not worth the $1000+ repair. Last option is to drive without power steering. Any issues with this?
Thanks.
Tom

The hose is a separate item that can be replaced. No need to replace the rack.

Maybe the "shop mechanic" should be replaced?

Why would a steering rack to a $1000 repair? A good rebuilt runs around $200-250 dollars and I cannot image it is more that 2 shop hours for install followed by a $100 alignment. Skip the shop install and you can probably do it in your driveway in about 4-5 hours. Skip the rebuilt rack and used a one is probably under $100.

I think you are talking about the high pressure hose in which case your mechanic is probably right. I do not remember any of the rust belt folk coming up with a solution although some tried brazing in the past with mixed results.
