Turn Signal Issue 444-544 1963

Hey all,

My name is Chris and I've recently acquired a 63 pv544. I've got a bit of work to make it road ready. Right now, I'm working on the front brakes and suspension.

I did notice something odd about the turn signal. It works fine switching to the left. However, when I turn it on to go to the right, it comes on constant. I checked the bulbs in front and back and both are coming on constant.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Hello,

Make sure the bulbs are the correct ones and are installed correctly.

Turn Signal Issue 444-544 1963

Chris;

There are some variations in this area on 544 models including 6V/12V. Please post or send link to your vehicle's confirmed wiring diagram and I'll try to help!

Otherwise have a look here and let me know if I have it posted there: http://www.sw-em.com/service%20notes.htm#Wiring%20Diagrams

Cheers

This seems to be the right diagram.

I'll check that the right bulbs are being used in the right tail light. From what it looks like, there should be an 1156 on top and an 1157 on the bottom?

Hello,

I can not remember which bulb goes on the top or bottom.

But if you look inside the socket you will see either 1 or 2 contacts.

The 1156 goes in the socket with a single contact and the 1157 goes in the socket with 2 contacts.

An 1157 is also used up front.

And also make sure you install the 1157 correctly.

Sometimes people force them in backwards - meaning that the running light contact is activating the (brighter) brake lamp filament. And vice-versa.

If you look at the 1157, you will see that one side post is higher on the bulb than the other. The socket is obviously the same way.

How many Brickboarders does it take to screw in a lightbulb ?

1156 and 1157 bulbs don't actually screw in...they are "bayonet' quarter turn base... 444-544 1963

...but I have to admit, I chuckled at your comment too...!

Ah, semantics, at least somebody thought it was funny!

OK guys,

So the bulb appeared good, with both filaments intact. However, when I went to take the bulb out to inspect it further, the whole glass part turned and the brass base wouldn't. Funny, the bulb worked like this, other than the problem I relayed to you all.

So, I took the base out with some needle-nose pliers, lightly sanded the inside socket and then put a new bulb in. Problem solved.
