I have never actually rebuilt a rack, but I did look into it at one time. Rebuilt racks can be purchased for less than $200 these days and installation is relatively easy. By the time that you add up parts and tools, you are not saving very much, and there is always a chance that when you get into the rack, it's worn beyond repair (or there are worn parts that are not included in your kit).

The amount of time involved in a rebuild, and the risk of doing it incorrectly and endangering yourself, are just not worth it, IMHO.

Back in the mid 80's, Volvo had a rebuild kit. It was 300 bucks, and with the Volvo special tools, you could rebuild a rack. Did about 6. Pain in the ass. You can buy an exchange rack for 200?

I would not recommend rebuilding your own. Get one from Jorgen and be done with it. Their service is smooth and without headaches.

Follow their procedures ( and here on the Board) to flush the new rebuilt one and your good to go. Check your high pressure lines and pick one up before you start the project if necessary.

I did this project last summer and it all went great. However, be sure to get your steering centered or your steering wheel travel will be more to the left or right when done. Don't ask me how I know! Then get an alignment and be happy again.

Only tried it once, and I have lots of years of experience with hydraulics. I didn't have the stuff to do the inside of the "tube", never tried again.

It seems that places that specialize in this kind of work are getting scarce. However here in SoCal, in San Diego as well as in L.A., I found that the shops that work on hydraulics for medium to heavy trucks do the trick. Do a web search in your area for rack and pinion rebuilding and/or axle rebuilding. Also, I find that the guys doing half shafts these days are the ones who have been doing racks for years.

I have never rebuilt one. Check Rockauto for kits, pretty sure they have some. Most people say that you need special tools to rebuild one. Not sure what those special tools would be. If you decide to pick up a rebuilt rack, most recommend Jorgen Auto.
