Puzzle: Drive Belt Arrangement 700 1990

1990 740 non-turbo

My 740 has had an abusive drive belt history. I'm trying to get it back to what it is supposed to be, but this question is so basic, I can't find it covered in the FAQ or searching within these posts. Two questions:

1) With the alternator and the AC having two pulleys each, there are several options for the drive belt arrangement. This is what I currently have:

- water pump gets the inside (rear) main shaft pulley
- alternator gets middle main shaft pulley
- AC gets outside (front) main shaft pulley

Is this the correct arrangement?

2) Currently, my water pump has its own belt, the AC has its own belt, but the belt for the alternator ALSO loops around the AC, on the AC's other pulley. I would think the alternator and the AC would each have their own belt, or one belt would be used for both. The AC having an extra belt seems odd.

Is this the correct arrangement?

Thank you for your puzzle solution!

You don't mention the power steering pump, which provides the only method of adjustment for the water pump.

lucid & aleekat both gave you the right layout. What is wrong on your car is the alternator belt should not be running in the rear groove of the AC compressor. The other two on your car are correct path but you need to confirm correct width too.

There's a picture in your owner's manual (go figure) http://apps.volvocars.us/ownersdocs/1990/1990_760/images/fff174.jpg

My '93 940 belts, per owners manual:

1) Water pump and PS Pump get the inside (rear) main shaft pulley groove. (3 pulleys = triangle)
2) Alternator gets middle main shaft pulley groove.
3) AC gets outside (front) main shaft pulley to front AC groove

Thanks lucid,
and that does match my 740 arrangement as far as main shaft pulleys.

On my 85.
Inner crank-power steering-waterpump
middle crank-alternator
Outer crank-a/c*
*note-a/c has two pulley groves, only one is used.
Your rubber bushings may need replacing. They get deformed and cause the belts not to run true. If memory serves, 7 will do the a/c(4) and alternator(3).

OK, aleekat, so your main shaft pulley sequence is what I have.
Amen!

Yes, the bushings on the alternator and the AC need to be replaced.

Both the AC and the alternator have two pulleys. So, you're saying that your alternator drive belt is independent of the AC unit? It makes an oval shape? As I indicated above, my alternator belt also loops around the other AC pulley, so the belt forms a triangle, not an oval. Your alternator belt forms just an oval?

Yes. And since I just did my timing belt I had to remove all belts. Replaced the alternator belt that had a bad spot. Size 15400 BTW. My alternator only has one pulley grove.
