A man went to the doctor and told him - Doc, when I put my fist in my stomach and bend over, my stomach hurts.

The Doctor told him - Don't do that any more.

On my 89/ 740 Turbo wagon, It turned out to be the Flame Trap was clogged and causing internal pressure to build. This causes the turbo return line oil to pressurize along with the rest of the engine block, thus causing oil to slip passed the turbo bearings. I changed my Oil tower and flame trap plastic screen and no more oil burning problems. A clogged flame trap screen will also cause various oil seal to POP out. This happened on a 82/240 wagon that I once owned and I had to change the main seal after pulling the transmission to get at the seal. Also my 84/240 sedan 1 month after I sold it, the main seal went. If your starting to get oil around the valve cover fill cap, this is another indication that the flame trap needs replacing. I would just replace the flame trap and tower with a new on. The old coked oil inside of the tower breaks loose even after the flame trap screen is replaced without doing the tower and causes the screen to clog all over again.

Good point! Absolutely check flame-trap and also consider cleaning out intercooler and getting new air filter. All of this much cheaper than replacing turbo. I am assuming smoke is blue which is oil. Black or white isn't turbo...

There should be no flame trap on turbo cars.

Oops, spoke too quickly. In my mind I saw the *oil-trap*. The taller version does provide more volume and prevents less leakage out valve cover cap. Personally, I wouldn't bother cleaning, just buy a new genuine Volvo one for $55 or so.

Burn oil out the exhaust? or burn oil off the exhaust/catalytic converter?

ANSWER smoking???? 700 1988

That is classic turbo blown symptom. Check for play in turbo spindle; remove air hose going into turbo from AMM to access.
