re: 87 245 auto - Strut top locknut removal tool 200

Hi All

I found out that Harbor Freight Tool no longer carries the "15/16" offset box wrench" in their store or online. What's my next best option? If you have other recommendation, please let me know. Thank you as always.

Option A

homemade tool; The bending looks very difficult to achieve...

Option B

homemade tool

Option C

62750 GM10 Strut Tool

Option D

Snap-On has a nice long handle deep offset 15/16-7/8 12-point wrench. I got one 20 yrs ago and well worth the price.
Note compared to other deep offset the Snap-On has stout thickness at the angle bend where you need clearance for the strut mount top lip, so I had to use a grinder to remove some material in that area.
It is one sturdy tool. HF tools are junk and not worth the money even if they were free. Spend the money on the appropriate tool or the Snap-On

Also MAC Tools has a Front End tool set of various size deep sockets with external hex to use a box wrench on and the Volvo strut size is included.

Hi Mike - They don't have it any more. :(

Hi Trev29 - Ok, How did you tighten the nut?

Hi Bruce and Travis - Thank you!!!

I've loosened the nut on quite a few occasions with a 15/16" socket and 1/2" rachet wrench. It's the first step before you raise the vehicle. If you don't have a deep socket, try extending the socket's reach with a couple of 1/2" washers between the socket and wrench.

Attach an extension tube over the rachet handle for more leverage and turn. If the shock starts turning also, try whacking the handle sharply with a 2 lb hammer to mimic an impact wrench.

If that doesn't work you could borrow/buy an impact wrench or visit a garage that will loosen (not remove) the nuts.

After the nuts are loosened, then you can proceed to using the spring compressors.

i've never seen the harbor freight wrench but i went to sears and they have this wrench: http://www.sears.com/craftsman-professional-13-16-x-15-16-in-full-polish/p-00944320000P?prdNo=20&blockNo=45&blockType=G45
its 20USD and is 15/16 offset on one side but it is 12 point not 6 point

    Hi,

You might want to call HF to verify, the 15/16" offset wrench is (was) sold in the set of offset wrenches.

But either way I think your best option is D. Option C wouldn't work and A and B would be tedious to fabricate.

    Here's option D at a better price:

    Hope that helps,

    Travis

I'd say option D, which looks like a copy of Lisle tool 63400, which I've used in the past. It was off the market for some time, but googling shows it to be available again.

Have you asked HF if they carry a set of offsets to include the 15/16" ?

    For the fun of Volvos,
    Mike
