Power Steering Pump Rebuild 200

I'm heading to a pull-a-part this weekend and I'm considering getting a power steering pump. The one in my car is working well, but I thought about getting a used one a a rebuild kit just to have an extra laying around.

My question is how difficult is it to rebuild a power steering pump? They are pretty expensive new and I would rather rebuild an existing one if it's not too difficult.

Get the pump, keep it as a spare. Don't assume it needs rebuilding until you try it.

Power Steering Pump Rebuild 200

Hi,

I have searched the archives before for the same type of information, there's not a whole lot on rebuilding.

The pump in my 90 244 seems like it's on borrowed time and I have a used pump from an 87. I was thinking about switching them out and in my downtime (not that there is a whole lot) I figured on rebuilding the one I take out of my 90 244.

I remember looking around at the rebuild kits and I can't remember what I figured out, but I think some of the rebuild kits came with a large seal and some didn't.

I have the steering pulley puller (I think you can also get one on loan from Autozone) I just need to research a bit more and acquire one of the rebuild kits, which are pretty inexpensive like you said compared to an entire power steering pump.

Hopefully someone will chime in that has experience with doing a rebuild.

Travis

I tried this on a 740 pump. The rebuild kit is readily available for not much money but you will definitely need a press to reposition the large rear piston and reinstall the c-ring holding it in place. The spring tension is quite high.

Hi Steve,

What type of press? Other than that is it pretty straight forward?

Thanks,

Travis

A bench press with a piston about an inch in diameter to depress the rear cover of the Saginaw TC pump. Check that you have the same pump.
