Where is my transmission leaking from? 200

I have a 93 240 series volvo with a leaking transmission. I pulled it into the garage over a clean piece of cardboard, and noticed that the drips were collecting under the passenger side at a distance lined up with the rear of the front wheel. Is there an online source of under-the-car diagrams which could help me pinpoint whcer this leak might be coming from? Or does anyone have a good idea what is actually leaking? Thanks....

My money is also on the cooling lines. Look for cracks there. Check out Lucid's picture. The 240 clamp looks similar. That is the most likely source.

Also check where the tranny output shaft bolts to the driveshaft. The bushing inside the rear of the tranny can become deformed with age and its seal will then leak. If that's the case, it will spray everywhere and make a hell of a mess!

Thanks all!!! I guess I'm going to have to put this thing up on stands, and get into check-for-holes mode. From reading other posts, it looks like it is possible to cut out a section of transmission line and insert some quality rubber line and clamp it in. If it is bad under the clamp, I'm thinking I might as well get both lines, right?

SAE hose rating for ATF cooler lines 200

"...and insert some quality rubber line..."

The SAE rating for ATF cooler hose lines is J1019.

I have also fitted in 5/16" O.D. copper or bundy tubing sections connected with brass compression unions.

    Hi,

    I agree with ricko.

Take a look at the two transmission lines that are right by the header pipe (and near the front passenger tire)-they might be clamped to the bottom of the transmission and they may be leaking under that clamp. You might need to clean the lines off and then take it for a drive.

I noticed you said you jacked up the car, make sure you are also using jackstands and not using the floor jack as your source for holding up the weight of the car.

with all due respect have you even raised the car enough to actually put your body on the ground and have first hand look? you might not need to even ask, from where is it leaking?

Yes, and that is why I put the cardboard down. It seems to be wet everywhere, and on a car this old, there is no shortage of crud etc. I do not have any ramps (which would be nice...), but I did jack it up, and looked. I saw no drips. I suppose I should have had the car running, but it just seems like quite a risky move having the car running while I am just barely able to get under it.... I was thinking if someone could point me to a diagram of the underside of this car, I could possible determine something from where I sae the "wet" spots on the paper.

Another "with all do respect"- if you don't have ramps, and you can't get under neath the car to diagnose- what difference does it make if you determine the leak location if you can't get to it to fix it? Take it to a mechanic

I don't have any ramps, but I have a hydraulic jack and 2 jack stands. I got under it just fine.

The photo shows the 940 tranny cooling lines passing thru a clamp/bracket. You should find something similar on your 240.

I suggest you lay on your back beside the car, and use several rags to wipe off those lines and anything else you can reach. Then after a short drive (say 10 miles or so), take a close look under again, looking for fresh signs of leakage you can trace to their source.

Ok, finally got this thing up on jack stands, and crawled under it. Wiped off the cooling lines which were covered in crud/fluid etc. Removed the clamp holding the cooling lines (which was loose...big clue) I found that the metal was worn down severly and could see fluid seeping from some microscopic holes in the line. Was unable to get a hack saw into position to safely remove the bad section of the line, so brought out my small pipe cutter (used for cutting plumbing lines) and sliced through on either side of the line (about 8 inches) and installed and clamped a new high temp rubber line in it's place. Had to modify the clamp to accomodate the larger line segment, and added a piece of the line (split and pressed on) to the other line next to it. Now the clamp holds down both lines securely. I can't find any info on posting pics here on this board. If someone would chime in and let me know how pics are posted, I will put up the pics I took along the way.... Thanks guys for all the help and info!!!

Check the transmission lines running from under the car to the radiator, I've had them chafe and break at the clips.
