89 740 rescue questions 700

There is a guy that has a nice looking 1989 740 non turbo auto tranny sedan nearby that has been sitting un-driven with brand new tires, exhaust and battery since 2006. He has bad seizures so his doctor revoked his driving privileges.

He offered the car to me for $300 If I tow it away. The tires are worth that alone I'm thinking....they have two miles on them! The battery may be toast but its an interstate.

I didn't see any sign of oil leakage from the engine or tranny when I looked at the driveway where it sits.

Is the car going to need some major work? He said he started it last summer...that was the last time he ran the car. According to the owner it ran and drove great but without a licence he wasn't able to use it. He did mention the brakes might give me a fuss since its been sitting so long.

This car is straight as an arrow and has no rust whatsoever....I have a 240 and have never owned a 740...are they relatively similar to work on? My 240 has 400,000+ while this 740 has 160,000.....would this be a totally different car to work on?

Is the $300 still a good deal for a car I will have to tow home?

    89 740 rescue questions 700

I just put my 89/740 turbo back into service. I had several problem with the fuel injection running rich and after several mind bending daze, I finally understand how it all works and now the car run better than when I purchased it. Flush all the fluids and remove the gasoline in the tank by pumping the gasoline out by jumping the fuel pump and using the return line nipple at the fuel pressure regulator with a long hose. What State are you located in.I'm on the East Coast. Expect the new tire to be a little bumpy from sitting until their driven awhile. The 240 and 740 engine aren't too much different.

I never considered the tires would a little bumpy....At least they all appear fully inflated. That is one of the reasons I'm considering this....at least I wouldn't need new tires.

The car is in the midwest. Nebraska area.

          "Sounds like a bargain"

Is it? I dunno for sure....to me it is but with the time and effort involved it may be a pain.

How was the wiring in these 740's around this year? Any known issues I should look for?

Its a bargain. In CT the junkyards pay $400 just to come pick it up for scrap. Snatch that thing!

I would say go for it---as has been pointed out---as a complete car (radiator, battery, cat, etc) it is worth that much just for scrap---but don't count on the "new" parts being new anymore. Tires degrade with age--have they been protected from the sun? -- at 6 years old they may be shot -- look for dry rot cracks/splits. Try them out on your 240 if possible--the thump you get may be permanent. The new exhaust may look good on the outside but the internal baffles may be ready to fall off and rattle around (like the salvaged exhaust I have on my '80 245). I've had good luck picking up Volvos that have been sitting for a long time -- but you will be putting some time and $ into it.---Dave

My biggest concern is electrical and the tranny/engine seals. I'm worried that once I get it all ironed out and running, the seals will have gone south....But, there wasn't any leakage so I assume the seals haven't shrunk or rotted since there isn't any oil leakage?

Its been parked in a clean shady location that looks to stay relatively dry. I didn't notice any dry rot of any kind on the tires but that don't mean squat. I'm sure there is probably some damage, it just wasn't noticeable right off. I'll have to see when I drive it someday...

                  no harness issues on '89's.

I would jump on it. If all else fails... Scrap yards are giving $400ish.

If it ran last summer, it has hope of not being a nightmare.
The seals.....They may actually start leaking and then stop as you use it.

I would also jump on it. lh2.4, as said no wiring issues, lots of reasons to keep it going, which it will for a long time.
I did buy a car that had sat though, and 3 of the tires were permanently flat spotted.
