Starter or just Selenoid? 200 1993

My starter will not engage. Not the slightest click. I checked voltage and and all appears well. I jumpered small connector to the + terminal on battery and got no joy. Neutral safety switch working fine as well. The car has had a dragging start for a while, but thought that might have been due to major heat in Nashville lately. I am leaning toward a faulty solenoid, but just wanted to run it by the board before going whole hog.

    Hi Jarrod,

Before you go monkeying around with the starter...... Some of the late model 93's have a fuse box of sorts mounted to the pos battery terminal. If you do, you might want to check the condition of the 60 amp ignition fuse in that assembly.

    Just trying to help.

Is it mounted right on the post or along fender wall? Mine hasn't ever had this. When ignition is turned I hear click in black box next to battery and coil. I'm pretty confident that it is the starter since the one in there looks original.

It's mounted right on the post. The older 93's didn't have this setup. There's actually a pic of this somewhere in the archives. Sounds like you're gonna be replacing that starter. I've had good luck with JY units.

I keep hearing that getting it out is a BIG PITA! I have plenty of extentions and 1/2" drive. I'll put her way up on the jack stands and crank on her.

Make sure the voltage doesn't drop below 8-10 volts when trying to start which could mean a bad battery.

I recently had a dragging starter, I swapped batteries and it continued to drag. Then I put a used new starter in and all was good again.

Make sure you have some VERY LONG extensions to remove the starter.I'm having the same issue, tried to remove the starter but the bolts are in an awkward position. If you have access to a lift no problem.By the shade tree, like me expect a little trouble.I gave up until I can go to my friends shop.

You can apply full voltage from the battery to the (using a heavy gauge wire) terminal at the bottom of the solenoid--the one that enters the starter motor. That should energize the starter as a motor only--no engagement of the flywheel. If that does not get the starter spinnning the motor part is bad and you might as well get a rebuilt, remanufactered or used (they all fit--even the older larger size) starter.
If the motor does spin you have a choice between replacing the works--or just the solenoid--either way the starter has to come off the engine. -- Dave
