M45 shifter extension question 200

Hi all,
I just pulled a M45 which is to go in my marathon rally 144 (build in progress). I noticed that the arms that hold the shifter are bolted to the casing with little rubber bushes - which on my gearbox were in a pretty sad state.
Can anyone tell me the point of these? I can't understand why Volvo would have wanted some sort of compliance in these arms. Can anyone think of a good reason why I shouldn't replace them with metal bushes and do the bolts up so as to hold the arms rigid?
Regards

Vibration/noise damping is all they're for.

M45 shifter extension question 200

Hello,

I agree with bob, but they are necessary for accurate shifts.

The parts are still still available from Volvo and I think we may have them in stock.

The stock bushings are fairly soft and I would not be surprised if you eventually had problems with the bushings.

If you are concerned about durability and longevity, you can make your own bushings fairly easily.

We have been making our own copies of non available bushings from new old stock parts with easy to make molds.

You can then produce the bushings yourself out of variety of hardness urethane rubber or urethane plastic to suit your preferences and they will fit very nicely because you are using an original bushing to start.

We currently make the non available shift linkage bushings for 1800e automatics, which also fits several types of other automatic and manual shift linkages and 1 of the non available early manual shift handle bushings.

We also make our own bushings for the 544/P210 clutch linkage bell crank shaft as the original Volvo bushings are too brittle and usually break while installing.
