544 Brake/suspension Upgrades 444-544

just acquired a 61 544 and trying to determine direction
-ex CA car, interior gone, no engine, partially disasembled

It was destined previously to be a reto rod....which is still a possibility, but I'm leaning toward a "semi-stock" build leaning to a streetable historic racer style (I'm previous SCCA racer)

While hunting down a new engine, figured i could get the rolling chassis in shape

Would need to upgrade brakes (disc).
Seen some how-to's w/ 122 sourced pieces...
- is anyone packaging a kit?

Likewise w/ the suspension, need to replace all the soft pieces, as well as a sportier spring/shock package.
- and recommendations? kits work best for me probly...

And lastly, if anyone HAS a 544 built to Historic Racing specs, (near MidOhio best)certainly would like to review some chassis prep, cage construction ideas

Thanks!

    544 Brake/suspension Upgrades 444-544

I have not seen or read about using the cross member and complete suspension from a 1800. For sure the B20 motor will fit and a lot more performance brake and suspension parts are available for 1800 than the 544. The 544 rear end suspension in my experience is not strong enough to support more than the original 90 HP. Good Luck

that what brings me back to considering the Mustang II type kits...and a narrowed Ford 9" out back
      - anybody manage to install one of these M-2 fronts on the stock frame horns?

Found one fellow up in Canada basicaly cut off the horns, replacing w/ 2x3 tube to install a Mustang type system, and a Chevy v6... interesting approach...
      - just not ready to go that way ... yet...

I've been beating on my rear suspension, with the original bushings, with a very pepped up B20 (something like 150 - 160 - 170-ish hp). Very hard launches, some occasional drifting, hard cornering. It may look goofy, but it's strong enough for the lightweight car. I recently stuck IPD poly in the rear just because the 49 year old bushing looked a bit iffy, but once I got the original rubber out it was actually quite solid still.

I am also putting disc brakes on my 1961 PV544. I cannot find rotors anywhere except over $600.00 for a pair.
Brembo, Centric do not make them and the usual auto parts stores do not have them.
I am in the process of fitting Volvo 240 discs to mine.
I have a thread started "will the 240 caliper fit onto the 122 mount 444-544".
You may want to follow it as I work my way through getting them installed.

Best of luck with your project.

I haven't seen a kit put out by anybody. Putting 122 discs on a 544 is a task that seems to get done by someone somewhere about once a year, on overage. Not really enough activity to elicit a kit. So you're left to your own creativity.

As for the suspension - you've probably already noticed there aren't many soft pieces in the front suspension. Just the thread spool inner/lower bushings. There's a bit more rubber in the rear suspension. Can't think of a good reason not to replace all that with poly. I did this recently on the rear suspension of mine, and was rather surprised at the shape the original rubber pieces were in. They looked a bit iffy from the outside, but once removed it was jsut a slight it of 'surface rot' - they were still really quite solid and functional. I put the new IPD poly stuff in anyhow.

I'd also heartily reccommend a front and rear sway bar set. Opinions vary on the value of a front and rear set vs. just a front bar, it's my opinion that front bar only leaves it in a heavily understeering balance, front and rear makes it more neutral, I guess it's personal preference there. Rear bar will make you wish you had a limited slip diff in there more, for sure.

Shocks - for performance use I think Bilsteins are the way to go. Back when I bought mine, I didn't find any other place selling PV Bil's other than the Swedish performance shop KGTrimning. Front and back, 1095 Skr each. The exchange rates haven't been kind to the goode olde US $ since I bought mine, 1095 Swedish crowns equals around $156, so they're a bit dear, I guess. On the plus side, they work really, really well and last forever.

Springs are another matter. The front ones are an unusual diameter, it's hard to pull anything out of a generic catalog based on the specs (diameter, height, rate) I think you'd have to have something custom wound. Not impossible by any means. Last time I looked (one of the original front springs broke on mine) I couldn't find anything other than stock replacements. So I put two new ones on the front, the front end sat *way* up in the air, eventually I chopped a coil or so off each one to settle the car back down again (matching the 49 year old sagged rear springs). If you find something, let us know!
