no overdrive when trans is warm - any suggestions or experience? 900 1992

Posted a couple of weeks back about this problem, but wasn't aware until recently that it seems to be directly related to heat. Have loosened the kickdown cable pretty much all the way, and have also been running an AutoRX treatment for the last 700 miles, but no results yet. Anyone have any ideas?:

When first driven, car shifts through all gears almost imperceptibly, and goes into overdrive easily. About 10-15 minutes into highway driving, or after periods of heavy stop-and-go traffic, it will either drop out of overdrive with light application of the gas pedal if on the highway and never go back in, or simply just never go into overdrive if gradually approaching speed from a stop. This happens more rapidly on hot days, much more gradually on colder ones - seeming to indicate it's temp related. If cruising (at this point, grinding along in 3rd) for long periods at lower-load highway speeds (lower ambient temps, flat or downward grades), it will occasionally pop back into 4th - again seeming to indicate that cooler operation allows overdrive. Trans will also take a few seconds when initially shifting into Drive when hot, but goes in instantly when cold. Shifting through all other gears is still smooth when hot, though.

I know the relay is good, fluid level is good, and I intend to do a flush once I've left the AutoRx in long enough. Kickdown cable operation appears smooth and unrestricted. I was under the impression that most solenoid, dirty or low-fluid related problems work in reverse - no overdrive when cold, but then ok when warmed up. My next inclination is to do the operation on the solenoid described in the FAQ, but there's something nagging me about the trans. taking those extra seconds to shift into Drive when hot. Just wondering if that could be related to the no OD when hot also, and if it's an indication of something possibly more serious than just the solenoid, like the valve body or something....

Sorry for the long post! Any insights or similar experiences greatly appreciated.

Assuming you mean an auto trans here (like an AW72?), I'd say just go ahead and do the flush. Old fluid gets thin and the hotter it gets, the thinner it gets.
    I blame the fluid.

    Cheers

Yes, it is an auto - AW71. Thanks for the advice - I hadn't thought about the fluid getting thin enough to affect performance but since the car is 20 years old, the trans is probably more sensitive to stuff like that. I'm also spoiled by my other 20-year old 940: zero trans problems and almost 300k on her! Flushes every two years on both cars, though - and I'm a couple months from that regular maintenance anyway, so I might as well do it...

Do the flush. The AutoRx probably has been in long enough anyway. Consider flushing with super cheap fluid and then refilling with synthetic. Expensive but worth it - IMO. Use at least 12-14 quarts.

The wiring to the solenoid and its connection are free of corrosion and in good shape?

Use at least 12 quarts of cheap fluid when flushing. Not 12+ quarts of synthetic ATF. Only refill with synthetic...:)

Thanks, JWalker, and also for all your advice on my previous post about this! I got thrown off last time by adding a quart of ATF, believing the fluid level to be low - and the trans shifted fine for a couple of days after that. But now that I recall, those were two exceptionally cold days and again this points to a temperature issue rather than just fluid level. Trans is definitely not leaking.

Am flushing tomorrow with the bulk ATF from Walmart ($3 a quart, can't go wrong with that) and will also check the solenoid now that I've found a driveway (this is a NYC street car, so it's hard to get under there on a regular basis). If none of that works, I might consider as a last resort adding an auxiliary trans cooler to keep the temp way down...
