run-on, and poor idle 120-130

You guys and the Yahoo 1800 group are my last hope (you too Walrus)! I am fighting a couple of problems with an engine that I re-built. B20 that did not need any boring; Pertronix; B20e head completely re-worked - injector holes well sealed, etc. My problems, rough idle and run-on. I have re-set the SU's about 50 times, and at present seem to be spot on for lean/rich issues. I can not find any vacuum leaks. The timing also seems to be spot on at 19 degrees BTDC and at 35 degrees when revved up. I have also checked valve lash, both static and while running. I have tried higher octane ethanol (sorry George), and am now running straight 87 octane gas. I am at my wits end!!! If I can get this sorted, I will have to take it to a very high-priced import shop, which will really gripe me. Not for the cost, just the inability to sort this myself.

Any suggestions?

What speed is your idle? Can you get it very slow? Do your butterflies have the overrun
    valves in them?
Tune in tomorrow for the THRILLING next development in "The Wagon Saga"!

    ps:Welcome back!

Sounds like you did a very thorough check, so I'm just going to throw out some ideas. Did you check for throttle shaft play? Maybe air's leaking around the shafts. Also, have you read the plugs? It seems improbable but you could have carbon buildup on the plugs, or maybe they're too hot. That's what occurs to me right now.

      Hello,

      What carburetor(s) are you using?

        Eric,

Running SU H6's. Plugs showed some blackening last night, but this was after I did a final adjustment on the carbs.. I cleaned the plugs with some ether, dried them, re-checked the gap and the engine still not running well. I can get the idle down to 750-900 but it "lopes" a bit at that idle - about 50-100 rpms.

Are your throttle shafts good and tight in the carbs?
Do you have overrun valves in your throttle butterflies?

Shafts seem to be good and tight - I can get any change in rpm's when I spray with starting fluid. I know this is not conclusive but...

I will check for the overrun valves, but I don't think there are any. By the way, I took the butterflies out of the manifold, threaded the holes and screwed in plugs with plenty of sealant.

            More tomorrow,

Kent, if it's any consolation, I've never gotten that type of manifold to behave decently, with or without the butterflies installed. I suggest you get the one preceding that one -- integrated intake/exhaust with no central plenum or aux butterflies, or cut the intake side off the one you have and use the exhaust side with the early aluminum intake.

H-m-m-m! Interesting~ I do believe that I might have the seperate manifold set-up in the junk pile. I might just give it a try. Any thoughts as to why the integrated manifold would create problems?

                Thanks,

                  Hello,

Which carburetor metering needles are you using?
