CAN'T FIGURE 1991 240 PROBLEM.... 200 1991

I have a 1991 240 and while running, every now and then the engine light will come on and feel like it wants to stall..give a little gas and she hangs on...you can hear the engine sound surge like higher idle, then lower idle sound, back and forth, very evenly, higher lower, higher lower. Put in an idle control thing in but no, still doing same thing. Thought it could be air mass..oxygen sensor. Mechanic can't find problem unless it happens when they are with car. What's your idea? thanks for your help..any brand better if i have to get oxygen sensor. also is air mass meter the same thing?? thanks, lynn

    CAN'T FIGURE 1991 240 PROBLEM.... 200 1991

Does your car have an EGR valve? The CEL should throw a code for it if it does not respond to the valve on the fender connected to the EGR by a vacuum line. The vacuum valve can become plugged and not vent itself under its top cap. The EGR can get sticky or leaky but I hope that is rare for I have not had that problem yet.

Otherwise, you might have a vacuum leak from the lines around the throttle or a bad check valve or line to the brake booster. Probably a rich/lean code will show up as well.

Does it start up easily and does this after a warmed up drive?

    Phil

Have you checked to see if there are any codes stored in the ECU?

"Have you checked to see if there are any codes stored in the ECU?"

...and if there are not any, ask your guy to clean and tighten the fuse holder at fuse #6, including the spade lug connections to it. If that isn't obviously the trouble, have him replace the fuel injection relay above the passenger's toes.
