1991 740 GL B230FB AMM Wire, Where to Source? 700

Hi ,

I am repairing my Bosch Air Mass Meter as the internal fine wires had broken. I have access to scientific equipment that will let me replace the wire.

However, I can't find the 0.07 mm ( 70 mcm/micron), 0.0028 inch diameter wire to use for the repair anywhere. It is Platinum wire but should be reasonably easy to get (I am in Australia, though). Perhaps some of the UK or US readers can help? Oh , it is officially a gauge 41 wire.

Thanks,

Cheers,

May I assume that's a Bosch -016 AMM, used with LH2.4 Jetronic? I've seen several of these units fail with intact hot wire, and actually never have seen one with a broken hot wire, thus I would expect you'd find plenty of duds with a wire ready to test and use.

However, I also understand you may be wanting to do this for academic reasons, and are not just looking for a DIY fix on the unit. I gave a try once, at finding a way to restore these, having had some success with the LH2.0 predecessor to the -016, but found the newer electronics beyond my access. What I could do was swap the sensor pod between the housings, containing the hot wire, thermistor, and resistor to prove the symptom followed the electronics.

Or are you working this angle because because duds are just not available in Oz?

      Hi Art,

Thank you so much for the terrific photos and advice. Just what I need. Yes, indeed, the AMM is the Bosch 0 280 212 016 used with the LH-Jetronic 2.4 system.

I am a scientist and an avid Volvo weekend mechanic so I am keen to learn at every opportunity. Even ones that occur when one of my children pokes a stick into a newly purchased AMM (reconditioned) and breaks the wire. I can't afford another one and this is my only option at the moment.

So, using your photos, I will rerun a new wire through the metal holders. I have a source here in Australia that can supply a 0.076 (76 micron/mcm) wire. I expect that it will be ok.

Generally speaking, there are not as many 'cores' available here as Volvos were not a high volume sales item.

Again, thanks, I will keep you up to date on my progress
      Cheers

        Wire found 700

Not having ever attempted anything like a filament replacement, I can only imagine the hurdles you must surmount will be in forming the Pt wire's loops while maintaining the length and attaining the crimp tension at the support wire's termination. A third obstacle I myself would need to clear has to do with age related loss of steady hand-eye coordination that makes itself known when I attempt needle-threading things like SMT placement. Please let us know how it goes now that you've found the wire. You can power it up and test on the bench, reasonably well, including a check of the burn-off function.

Would this be what you're looking for? (It's all a mystery to me.)

If that's the stuff, yikes! I can see why AMMs are so expensive.

      Hi Chris

Thank you very much for the quick reply and link. I really appreciate it.

I've checked out the site and will ring them in the am but it doesn't look
like they have the 0.07 mm platinum wire that I'm after . They may know
      who does though !

      Cheers
      Bruce
