Stealership Quotes 200

Called the Volvo dealer here in Cincinnati and asked what it would cost to recharge my AC. Their answer - $250. They said it would take 1.5 hrs, at $120/hr, and $68 for the freon! I'll figure out how to do it myself. Those kits can't be that hard or time consuming I bet.

Anybody else have a stealership quote that seemed exorbitant? Might be amusing to start a thread on 'em.

$250 seems cheap for dealer. Freon is expensive no matter who you buy it from. I recall paying a local mechanic in the late 90's to recharge my AC and it was $350.

I think even if you go dealer repair, you may still find 240 AC unsatisfactory. I always thought my 86 240 AC was disappointing and expensive.

      Lousy AC performance 200

Yeah, it wasn't until I think 1992 or 93 that the 240 AC system was satisfactory. May have been when Volvo switched to R-134a system? My 1990 240 AC sucked before and after I had it converted to R-134a.

A while back I needed an oil separator/breather box for my 90 244. The dealer 15 min away from me wanted $65, at Tasca they are about $35. Both dealers near where I am now never stock parts for 240s anymore.

    Stealership Quotes 200

    Dukester...My compliments on coining the term;"stealership" !
Having work done at the Volvo dealer is always going to be pricey.

A few years ago,I tried to do a DIY recharge kit on my 85 244...It did not work out to be easy or successful.
I live in Southern California, and functional AC would be really nice, but I decided to just sweat it out, for 2reasons;..first of all, even when fully charged and tuned, the AC in our 85s is not that spectacular, secondly, here in SoCal,using the AC full time takes about 5 mpgs from the normal.

Here's a good thing; Cincinnati has cold winters, and the heater in a 240 is outstanding.

And, on the stealership subject thread;about 4 years ago,I called my local Volvo dealer, and asked for an approximation of what it would cost to have my rear trailing arm bushings replaced;"around $800 to $1000 dollars"

One more thing: Imagine if you owned a stealership,or if you worked there? (I agree that your AC recharge quote is rather exorbitant.);,,but,if someone brought my 85 244 in, and asked for a quote to do complex and uncertain repair work,I would give them a 'worst case scenario' price quote.)?(

and, speaking of coining new terms; looks like I just did a 'blabberpost'!

      Do me a favor.

Google "stealership" and see how long it's been around, not only here but in every other DIY auto repair forum.

      It predates the internet.

oops...I didnt even need to do you the favor.I should have known and/or realized that the term has been around for years.

        "It predates the internet."

...Son of a bitch!..I guess it shows how out of touch I am, or have been.

It makes me wonder about how many other slogans or words I am unaware of)?(

120$ an hour at the Cincinnati Volvo stealership?

    Stealership! That funny!!!!!

Heck, some independent garages that service Volvos charge at least that or more hourly.

I have ten pounds of R12, new R12 (R-12). And two Volvos with faulty (really, does that happen, failed AC on a 240?) R-12 systems. It's been like six years now. Still futzing with suspension, driveline, and the usual stuff. Things like AC and stereo come lastly, I guess.

The 1992 240 GL has R-134. In nearly five years' ownership, I dunno if I ever used it.

Welp, happy chilly motorin' in the ultra humid and hot Summer!

    cheers,

Bear in mind you live in the cool and not humid (in summer anyway) PNW. The Midwest (including Cinci) is hotter and much more humid than the PNW.

I lived in Portland so I know PNW summers. Think I turned on my AC maybe twice when I lived there...:)

    first question: 85 244?

    R12
or which of the Volvos you list need the recharge

R12---AKA the old FREON is about $100++ a pound....normal Volvo full recharge from 0 is a bit more than a Pound.....

    newer R 134(?) is cheaper.

Is the Volvo fitted with 134

Assuming the 240 was converted, then it must be R134A. Most older cars have been converted because of the cost of R12. Unless the stealership used very little freon (R12)....??

The 850 came from the factory with R134A.

    Stealership Quotes 200

Just paid $30 for a heater hose which Tasca says has a MSRP of $21 and which they sell for $13.

I would NEVER consider having a dealer do work on my car after the warranty period. I have a local mechanic who started out at the Volvo dealer 30 years ago, then opened his own shop - he knows 240s backwards and forwards, and he quoted $160 to test, vacuum and recharge my A/C after I replace a hose. I'm going to take him up on the offer.

$9.74 *each* for the light bulb that goes in the small clock, small tach, small volt meter etc.

Available at Auto Zone. Blazer brand, #2721 in a two pack for $1.99, last time I checked.

As a side note, about 15 years ago, one of my sisters-in-law had a 1991 240 and an independent shop charged her $10 for the white plastic flame trap filter and $32.50 plus shop charges to replace it, as part of an over all maintenance service that was done. I realize it is worth far more than that, rather than having a rear main seal blow out, but still, that seemed pretty expensive.

      --
      If it needs to be maintained, repaired or replaced on a 1990 240, I've probably done it. '90 240DL, 322,958 miles, will she make it to 400K ?? >>You haven't really worked on a car until you draw blood<< :-}
