1989 240 Bentley Says New Crank Bolt When Re-Installing Balancer

Hello:

Bentley says you need to install a "New" crankshaft pulley bolt when re-installing or replacing the balancer?

True or False?

    I would not worry about it. The bolt is not in a place like the head bolts are and reused twice. Just torque it correctly.

    Head bolts endure compression forces and repeated thermal expansion cycles.

    The crankshaft bolt just spins round and round with RUBBER belts yanking perpendicular to the large crankshaft diameter under the pulley, duh. They just want the bolt tight because of the engines rotational effect that could be spin loose the bolt and did not justify left hand threads.

    There was a time when the “wise guys” of Chrysler put left-handed threaded lug nuts “only” on the left side of the car to hold the wheels on. Now, that was some “pain” for the not knowing good Samaritans and gas stations jocks.

    Teh Volvo Green book makes no mention of this.

    I have never replaced in the 6 Belt changes I have done on my '89.

    that's a new one

    my Bentley only insists that I renew the caliper bolts whenever I take them off for a rotor or wheel bearing replacement.

    My edition says nothing about the Crank bolt....done that 2X following the Bentley.

      I haven't heard of anything regarding this before either until I came upon this Bentley update -

      I don't know if it is a stretch bolt.
      Just wondering if it is like other Euro cars that use stretch bolts - though
      this does not look or feel like a stretch bolt.

      CB...I hear you.I guess we have the same Bentley.I will reluctantly admit that I have done several caliper jobs,and sneakily,and/or perhaps foolishly not renewed the caliper bolts!

      Bottom line;If I was a writer for Bentley,I would make sure to recommend any and all things that were factory spec'd,or smart and well advised....in other words;do things in the best and safest way possible!

      Furthermore; keep in mind; the last time I heard of a crank or caliper bolt failure,was back when Fred Mertz knocked out Ernie Shavers in round 2,back in 1953!

        I gather from what everyone else has said I am being OCD and foolish.
        On the other hand I have an Benz diesel that I do all of my own work on and there are a lot of strange or odd-ball things about European cars.
        Just don't want a re-do...

    I've not ever done so. I don't have the Bentley guide. All other guides I have do not mention that.

    The 1998 (ninth printing) Haynes 240 manual makes no such mention.

    I have a 164 green Volvo OEM shop manual someplace.

    Else, I do use the crank counterhold. Not isolating the crank so it does not move during big bolt removal and replacement and damage stuff like the timing belt crank gear pulley alignment dentent (tooth).

      Thanks for your reply.
      I have another euro car tat does use stretch bolts and without measuring the stretch it is best to just buy a new bolt.
      However, I don't know if the Volvo crank bolt is such an animal.
      I have not read anywhere in my Haynes or Chilton manual about this but came across it online at -

      This is a Bentley correction shown online - valid or not - I don't know.
