sway bar links overtightened 900 1993

I had a clunk in the front end and replaced a ball joint and did the sway bar links at the same time. The clunk seemed just as bad afterwards so I tightened up the sway bar top nuts to see if that would help. The car was as noisy and jarring as a dumptruck after that - I could feel very small parallel bumps on the roads! I loosened those nuts and all is well.

The UK 940 hardcover manual (largely a waste of money*) says to tighten the nut to achieve a dimension of 42mm between the bottom of lower metal cup washer and the top of the upper washer.

To me it was a waste after finding most of it is a direct lift from the older 740 - 760 Haynes, which also shows the 42mm tightening spec.

I have that book. Too bad it's not more like the Bentley for 240s, which I like. A detail I should have included in my post is that the old links were not straight like the replacements. I checked IPD to see if they sold aftermarket links that were not straight but could not find any. I wonder if this was a modification done by the previous owner.
