740 Turbo Wagon stalling\hard restart 700 1989

I just bought a 89 740 TW from a nice couple in Corvalis. After buying the wagon, at the first stop sign the car dies. It restarts after a few tries and is fine. After a while on the 5 i feel a slight power drop off, I try to accelerate and the power drops off at 65. When I down shifted I got past 65 but after it shifted again the power dropped off. Any Idea's?

Tim

That's what im going after next, cap, rotor, plugs, air filter. Any suggestions on plugs? Also, was the turbo in the 89 740 turbo wagon the same as the 89 760 turbo wagon?

If your wires and cap and rotor are good or you replaced them and its still doing it go to a junkyard and get a used power stage and plug it in.My 88 740 turbo did the same thing and i got ripped off for a new air mass meter and hall sensor and it still died .POWER STAGE i'd bet anything. The Air Mass meter i had installed 20,000 miles ago just failed again. That part cost me at a repair shop 401$ and now they want 380$ plus 60 to install a new one(at the most reputable volvo repair shop in atlanta).I'm so pissed. The first shop also charged me 100$ to change the hall sensor but insted put an old distributer base plate with sensor attached in with an old crudded up rotor and said they replaced it BUT DIDNT REALISE I HAD ALREADY TAKEN OUT MY DIST AND SHINED IT UP before it went to the shop.I even took pictures to prove their lie.Sad to say it but i dont think a modern age mechanic can fix these cars, they just dont have to pay each time they try new parts to find the failed one.We do!Find a Volvo junk yard and make friends with them so theyle loan you used parts to try yourself or that car will get real expensive real fast.sosrry for sounding pissed but i am.Prayers for you.

You have 3 pullapart.com in the Atlanta area. Go to their website and you can see what volvos they have on the lot and what date they were placed. You can't call and see if they have the part. You have to go yourself with tools. VERY cheap. You even can get a 30 day warranty for a couple $. Last AMM I bought in Nashville pullapart was under $20.

740 TW is what? 89 NA had lh2.4, 89T had lh2.2. If you have the first you can pull codes, it's in the FAQ. If not then you can't.
Symptoms are of CPS or Hall sensor, power stage, radio suppression relay, grounds, and possibly others. Try to figure out if you're losing fuel or spark. Power dropping but not quitting altogether can be low fuel pressure, which can be fpr, or even clogged filter.

Ok it was late and my comprehension meter was turned down.
So it's an 89Turbo, so it has lh2.2, so you can't pull codes. Also there is no CPS, but there is a Hall sensor in the dist. See what the plug there looks like, apparently sometimes you can see if the connector is bad.

So i just went out and started my 740 turbo wagon and it started fine then died, it did this 3 times and then stayed running but the idle is hunting from 300 to 1200. I reved the engine up to 2k rpm and had some intermittent missing or power loss. When i put it in reverse it shot to 1k and pulled hard backwards without my foot on the gas.

Sounds like an air leak somewhere. Turbos really hate leaks. Check turbo intake hose, especially the underside for cracks etc. They also can get soft and collapse killing airflow. That's what it sounded like when you were running highway speeds. The idle. Wouldn't hurt to clean your idle control valve. I run NGKs. Not sure if you have a Garret or Mit turbo.
