re: 87 245 auto - Door Sill Ventilation 200

Hi All

I want to drill small holes along the door sill & plug grommets (like shifter linkage bushing) so that there is ventilation.

I would love to hear your comments. Thank you as always.

Block off rocker 200

The problem is that the venting system continues into the rockers. Bringing along with it leaves, dirt and water.

You could remove the fender. And slice into the rocker in line below the door hinge and install a plate to block off the rocker. And open a hole forward of that for the exit of the leaves and water.

Block off rocker 200

Hi Trev29

Brilliant! I will keep that in mind when I patch up the holes in the floor pan at some point. Thank you.

re: 87 245 auto - Door Sill Ventilation 200

If you want a place to look for rust...that is a design flaw in the 140/240 body...it's at the seam where the upper meets the lower body...the seam that's hidden by the rear bumper.

Dirt and road salt get trapped by the bumper rubber and the seam rusts thru.

On sedans it rusts thru to the trunk. On wagons, thru to the hidden compartment.

If there is a lot of rust, you've got to remove the bumper to get to the seam.

Hi CB

Thank you. I must be lucky, no rust there.

It seems like my Swedish Baklava is baked only on the center, not along the edge. so, I am good for now, I just need to find hard working honey bees.

Hi All

Thank you all as always!!! I will do just that; clean, wash and treat rust. It sounds like drilling is not a good idea.

However, I am still not convinced that why they made a water channel like Roman aqueduct.

240's are far from air tight. I do not think you will gain anything but added noise and exhaust smell.

Hi CB and Scorron

I posted up more photos...

I need to clean out my rocker panels, they are filled with leaves (I think they are from previous owner's year) but drains are clear and open. I just thought that these holes might help.

I made my own cowl covers when I got my flying brick.

As you said, You need to clean out your rockers thoroughly, from the access holes hidden under the carpet. After that, flush them with clean water from a garden hose and make sure they drain well. That is the best thing you can do to prevent more rust from forming inside the rockers.

Make sure to brush away any loose rust and treat the rusted steel with a rust converter or something to dissolve it, like naval jelly. Then paint over the bare metal.

Your idea of drilling new holes would be, at best, of no help, and at worst, a new source of rust. Anytime you remove paint and galvanizing, exposing bare steel, you are inviting rust to begin.

Additional to what Scorron said_

It is possible to remove the plates that anchor the end of the seat belt. Requires removal of the carpet, and moving (with great care as it's brittle plastic) of the inside cover of the "B" pillar). Maybe more, just use common sense.

Once off, there is a 2inch x 2 inch hole into the rocker panel, able to receive the nozzle end of a vacuum cleaner. Use a straightened coat hanger to loosen up the "whatever" that's in there.

Good Luck,

Bob

re: 87 245 auto - Door Sill Ventilation 200

There already are "vents"

air comes in the cowl/grill just behind the hood-in front of the windshield.
Some of that air exits thru the drain vents at the bottom of the rocker panels....as you show in the second diagram.

Keep those drains free of debris and you are good to go.

This was not one of the engineering design faults in the 140/240 body design.

re: 87 245 auto - Door Sill Ventilation 200

Hi CB

If I may...

Doesn't hot air go up? I am getting so much rust on top part of the door sill. It's like a bathroom without a window or vent fan...
