Sorry, but another speedo question. 700 1992

I have a 92 wagon. When the speedo acts up the car runs different.
Is this a clue that suggests that the sender is bad or does the speed signal go to the gauge cluster then to the engine computer.
I am hoping the signal goes to the computer dirctly from the speed sensor.
Another clue is that when it starts acting up, I can make the speedo work intermitently when I am on and off the throtle abruptly. This action only involves the the slop in the diff, not the gauge cluster.
It is a California car. No corrosion at the sensor plug. I took it off and cleaned it anyway, made no difference.
I had a very leaky diff that has since been repaired. Could something be damaged or goofy from lack of diff oil?
Sure do hope it is the sensor not the gauge.

The speedo connections at the back of the instrument cluster are four: +12V, ground, and two from the sensor on the rear axle. If you are having rough running conditions, your problem may be in the ground, charging or voltage regulating circuits. Place a voltmeter on your system and see what happens as you drive.

The car is running oddly, not rough. Does not miss, but is slighly down on power. When at idle it will idle at 1200 Rpm. Seems like a "limp home" mode for the computer because it is not gettting input from the speed sensor. These symptoms are only present when the speedo is acting up. Runs perfectly otherwise.
So you are saying that the low voltage is causing the speedo variation due to low voltage at the gauge cluster and causing the poor running independant of the speedo. I will put a volt meter to check the charging system.
