Cruise Control in an Amazon 120-130

I've taken a few long trips in our amazon and have found it takes almost as long for my right leg to recover!

If anyone has been through the process on an SU equipped car, how did you handle the linkage?

    Here is a photo of the cruise installed in my 122. It uses an electric transducer/brain which can be seen in the lower left. The kit comes with a lot of extra parts, so putting together a linkage was not hard.

        I picked the kit up on ebay.
        The kit I used was a Rostra 250-1223 and a magnetic sensor with magnets that attach to the driveline (250-4165) to send a speed reading to the cruise.

          Hello,

          From what I can see, the cruise control kit you bought does not come with a control switch.

          So what kind of switch are you going to use?

          I checked into speed signal generators and I was wondering if you considered Rostra speed signal generator, part number 250-4160?

          It is more expensive, but it does not have to be mounted under the car.

          And you might find a similar speed sensor out in the junkyards for a lot less.

          You will just have to take your car to a speedometer repair shop to have the speedometer cable modified and make your own electrical connections to the cruise control.

          I hate attaching anything to the driveshaft and I hate adding extra wires and brackets that can be damaged by simple road debris.

          It seems to me to be a problem waiting to happen.

            Unfortunately the kit came with a control that mounts on the left side of the column and it was not the kind that replaces your turn signal lever. I mounted it below the turn signal switch just far enough away that the headight switch is still accessible. It is shorter, so hitting it instead of the turn signal has not been an issue. Now if I had been smarter, I would have picked up a switch that mounts on the right side.

            I saw the 250-4160 speed signal generator and was tempted to try it. Its designed to attach directly to the speedo cable. I went with the 250-4165 because I was not sure whether the cable would fit.

              Hello,

              I understand your mounting concerns.

              I have seen this type of speed signal generator mounted in the middle of a speedometer cable on a Dodge/Chrysler product.

              So if I were doing this installation, I would mark a spot in the middle of the stock speedometer where I wanted the speed signal generator to be installed.

              I would probably have the speed signal generator mounted on a section of the speedometer cable just before it goes through the firewall or possibly on the cable inside the car.

              And then go to my local speedometer repair shop and have them cut the cable and install the correct threaded fittings to mount the speed signal generator in the middle of the stock speedometer cable.

              You basically wind up with 2 speedometer cables and having the speed signal generator acting as a union for the 2 cables and all the wiring is either under the hood or inside the car.

      Looks great. Perhaps come back again in 2-3 weeks and tell us how it's performed for you throughout that time? how did you mount the controls inside the car, which ones did you opt for?

    Wow. I just finished the installation of a Rostra kit and it worked first time. My only complaint is that the hydraulic brake switch on my amazon is not very sensitive, so sometimes I hit the brakes and put in the clutch and the over-rev protection is what disengages the cruise. The over-rev protection is good too-- if you press in the clutch while engaged it only lets the engine rev a tiny bit before it kicks in and disengages the cruise.

    The kit I used was a Rostra 250-1223 and a magnetic sensor with magnets that attach to the driveline (250-4165) to send a speed reading to the cruise. I'll post some pictures when I get them downloaded from the camera.

    My CC kit was sold as aftermarket universal by sears in the 70's. Has a little transistorized brain , bunch of wires...don't have pics right now, I just did the install as per instruction...only complications were fabbing up a way to attach the CC cable to the SU throttle linkage...I made something up and it worked fine. BTW this system uses intake vac to power the CC cable, which I like as on hills etc the vac goes down and the CC speed lowers....much preferable to modrn systems that stomp on the gas on hills.
    My Volvo parts guy says the Sears kit is pretty much the same as the Dana CC kit that Volvo used on the 240s, with some cleverness you could use scrap volvo CC from a 240. Another note, VW has a fine CC system, with an electric vac pump that would make a good donner.

    It's possible. I personally installed a cruise control on our 1984 4speed VW Vanagon. (VW dealer said that it could not be done), it worked great . i had to extend a few wires of the harness since the engine was in the rear. The pick-up was taken off of the coil.
    Also, I remember seeing a 122S 4dr. 4speed sedan at the VCOA National Meet at Niagara Falls in the mid-90's that had cruise control.

    Many years ago I installed Dana Speedostat cruise controls on over 20 different models of cars. They worked very well, using magnets on the driveshaft, or front axle shaft. for speed input. The kit was quite adaptable. I think Dana sold out to Rostra Precision Controls. It appears they sell a nice universal kit, which has been upgraded to use an electric servo instead of a vacuum servo. If I had a 122, I would buy one of those kits and install it. You'll need to do some adapting, but it can't be that hard.

    I used to make a nice side income doing installs. It was fun!

    Price seems right to waste away on a experimentation. Seems to be plausible this would work.

    I don't have a problem driving long distances, routinely done Raleigh, NC to Dallas, TX (1100 miles or so). But it would still be nice.

    This won't be much help, but I know it's possible. My brother's '71 145s had it. There was some sort of magnetic pickup on the driveshaft. I don't recall how the servo connected to the linkage, though.

      Thanks for starting this thread.

      I also haven’t done it… yet…expecting “they” will tell us it’s dangerous and no doubt illegal for commercial shop to install. Or that Sw-em Ron engineered kit for us years ago.

      I have 4 old cars / trucks / Jeeps/ tractors with “Hand Throttle”. They work. They all have single carb. 2 have cables, 2 have hand throttle lever and linkage to carb.

      Cable routing and mounting/connection to SU throttle linkage at common linkage push/pull joint requires engineering.

      I have gotten as far as possible 122 hand throttle mod parts:

      122 choke pull with bell crank and choke (jet drop) cable. 122 heater cable clamp mounts.

      MG/MGA/MGBs twin SUs accelerator cable parts.
      Cable trunnion / U bracket for cable connection at SU carb linkage.
      MGA Illustrated Parts Breakdown (IPB) parts books might show parts.
      Moss Mottors or Northwest Imports might be MG bracket/parts source.
      I no longer have MGA to look at directly.

      Military Jeeps (M38/M38A1) and WWII trucks “Hand Throttle” T handle mounted to dash with cable. Pull T lever, ratchets out, turn to release. Might be good handle/cable to use. Drove with this A LOT!

      Lawn mower replacement throttle cable (saw them at ACE hardware).

      Jeep hand throttle mod kit (mounts to shift lever, operate with thumb, so you can shift, gas, brake, clutch, steer all at once at 0 MPH (think Rubicon Trail).

      Hot Rod - Hollywood Wolf Whistle cable and pull.

      Bicycle cable / cable trunnion / parts.

      Please let us know if you get further engineered.

      Drive carefully.
