what's up with these wheels 120-130 1962

Yesterday I saw an ad on eBay for some OEM Volvo, extra wide rims that one of our frequent flyers (agent_strangelove) has for sale. This prompted me to write him, to wish him luck and to
ask him what he knew about the rims I took off my '62 2dr last year. The centers are stamped with the following-89991, either a /61 or a /6/-not sure, but I believe it is the former, a hard to read #2 (bigger and a different type face than the 89991, and an "S" inside what looks like a modified, geometric fish. The bolt pattern is the standard 5 on 4.5. They will accept the early 10" hubcap and are 15". They appear untampered with but the rims measure just over 7" wide outside of rim to outside of rim. They had 195 Michelins on them. I never noticed any rub or a
increased turning circle. I drove on these for about 3 years before putting stock estate rims back on. A_S says the numbers are correct for the early wheels. They show no sign of being widened by having a spacer inserted. Could the 89991 center have been removed from the stock rim and welded into a these wider rims? The welding looks like a factory job. Can one buy just a wheel rim w/o a center?

what's up with these wheels 120-130 1962

Hello,

There are several shops just in California that can widen stock wheels by removing the centers and welding them into brand new rim outers.

And until very recently, that is what we would do for our customers that wanted wider wheels, but with the original centers and hub caps.

However, VP is now selling brand new reproductions of the 5.5" wheels that came on 1969-1970 122 and 1969 1800.

The cost is around the same, but you get a completely NEW WHEEL!

I emphasize "new wheel" because about 15 years ago we had a customer's 122 towed in after his right front wheel came off.

He was getting off of the freeway on a very tight exit loop when the wheel came off, doing almost no damage to the car or to the owner as he was going slow at the time.

All the lug nuts were still on the studs and the wheel had pulled over them.

Every since then, we keep a close eye out for excessive wear at the lug holes and we keep larger lug nuts in stock.

Lug nut holes 120-130 1962

After re-doing my rear torque rods, I noticed that the lug holes in the wheel were worn a bit more than I liked to see. The tire store torqued down the nuts to 100 lbs, I was a bit more cautious and used 90 lbs.

Brand new rims? Are they made with Bangladesh steel? Do they cost a small fortune? Are they already painted/powder coated?

Lug nut holes-Extended Conical Lug Nuts 120-130 1962

I use a set of these for my car:

I had the stock wheels widened, and the shop had to do something to the lug holes that made them a little bit wider. They told me to get some of these extended conical lug nuts.

They fit great, and look more secure than the stock ones did. I can shoot a couple of pictures of them if anyone is interested.

Paul

Hello,

We have sold 2 sets of these wheels and in both cases I did not notice a country of origin.

The wheels cost around $115.00 a piece plus shipping and are painted or powder coated in a similar color as the originals.

This seems to be the only sensible explanation. I'd upload a couple of pics but I can't see how to do that.
